Hello, I am VERY interested in purchasing a Remington model 870p 12 gauge shotgun with the 14 inch barrel, black parkerized finish, bead sight, and modified choke. My only concern is that the barrel is to short to be legal. I am not in the military, and I'm not a police officer. I'm just a civilian. I live in Indiana.

That would be a SBS or Short Barrel Shotgun. Someone who has done it can explain better, but it requires a tax stamp and approval before being purchased.

So, what exactly do I have to go through to legally aquire one of these as far as the BATF is concerned?

Minimum length for a shotgun barrel is 18 inches. Anything shorter and you've got an NFA (National Firearms Act - 1934) weapon on your hands, and you'll have to go through the same process required for obtaining a fully-automatic machine gun.

This link will give you some more details.

Basically, a $200 transfer tax must be paid, an application must be filled out and signed by your sheriff, though they may refuse to for any reason. There are ways around this, like forming a corporation and having the corp. buy the gun. You then submit the application to the BATF, wait 6 weeks to 6 months for approval, and then you're clear.

So, even with one of those $200 tax stamp things and approval, I couldnt get one as long as I live in Indiana?

A Remington 870P w/ 14" barrel with a Modified Choke? That's rather odd isn't it?

Not really. Remington has been putting fixed chokes in its shorter barrels for some years now. Most all of their curent production 18- 20" barrels (save for the ones used in the 'home defense' versions of the Express, those are still CYL) have ImpCyl chokes. And there are occasional runs of 18- 18.5" 870 Police barrels made with fixed Modified chokes. I have a couple of them here.

Could be the shorter barrels require a bit more choke to get patterns, I don't know. Never messed with an SBS, never could see any reason to subject myself to all the hassle. An 18- 18.5" barrel does fine for me.

From what I've seen, a Mod choke in a 14" bbl produces similar patterns to a 18" Cyl or ImpCyl Bore...

You can't own own a Remington 870 SBS in Indiana, but you can own a Remington 870 AOW there.

The AOW has a $5 transfer tax, but it will come in a "pistol grip only" configuration, and you can never put a shoulder stock on it.

Does Remington produce that exact same shotgun only with a pistol grip?
