Sig or Kimber

You're comparing apples to oranges, actually more like fruits to vegetables. You'll have to handle and shoot both, which platform do you prefer? Which action do you want? The only things that are the same is that both are chambered in .45 ACP and they're both single stack.

The Kimber 1911 feels better to me than the P220, but I'm a 1911 guy at heart. I prefer the short 1911 SAO trigger compared to the DA/SA action of the SIG P220. Both are really excellent guns, but the main thing to decide is which platform you want. Do you want a SIG P-series pistol or do you want a 1911 platform?

Handle both: see how they point, see how they handle, how they feel and even dryfire it. See which trigger you prefer. What do you plan to do with this gun?

You really can't go wrong. If I had to choose, I'd pick the Kimber...but that's simply because I'd pick the 1911 over the SIG. I do love SIGs also however.

Lastly, as much as I love the P220 pistol, the reason I don't own one is because the 1911 platform exist.

In a .45 caliber I'm a 1911 guy so I'd say go with the Kimber I own 4 of them. I likethe Sig & H&K in a .40 caliber. Prefer the Sig P226 & 229 & the H&K P2000.

Either eay they are both good manufacturers you won't go wrong wioth either.

Question is What Kimber? 3" Ultra, 4" Pro, 5" full size?

I like the Sig 220 myself. But in the end I like 1911s more. I dislike safeties but the 1911 is probably the only exception I make to that rule.

I like the SIG P220 much more then the 1911. As for SIG vs. Kimber I would still say SIG unless it is an old school Kimber, as the newer batches over the past couple of years have been plagued with QC issues. Course SIG now has the Kimber guy at the helm and is having more QC issues then in the past.

I still say P220.

The P220 is available with a SAO trigger, in three different barrel lengths (3.9" "Carry," 4.4" standard and 5" "Match"). The standard one is the one I would get. The thumb safety (in the same location as a 1911's) is also ambidextrous and does not block the slide from moving when engaged. It is not as slender and flat as a 1911 and the trigger pivots instead of slides and is not quite as crisp or light, but is still perfectly decent and usable. I could also do without the grooves and saw teeth on the frame. I would expect it to be more reliable than the fussy modern renditions of 1911s, like my own SIG GSR.

I'm not a Kimber fan (although I really like 1911s) but I'm not a SIG fan either.
If I had to, I'd go w/ door #3, none of the above & get a SIG 1911

Thanks for mentioning the P220 with the SAO trigger. I wasn't sure if the OP was looking into a fullsize pistol or not, so I kept it with the traditional SIG action (thus not mentioning the DAK trigger either). Unfortunately, the OP is a CA resident, and the P220 SAO in it's 4.4" and 5" Match form is not on the CA DOJ list. So we're unable to buy it, thus I didn't mention the SAO action. The P220 Carry is available however, but I didn't bring it up since I assumed he mentioned a fullsize pistol.

As much as I am a fan of the Browning desgined Colt 1911/1911A1 of the two I would pick a Sig any day over a Kimber

The Kimbers of old were great some of the new ones have had some problems.
As often happens when production is increased to meet higher demands quality can slip that and I am not a fan of MIM parts.

IIRC the Sig 220 was first adopted in 1975 the first ones were issued in 9mm
The Browning BDA was the first of the .45ACP 220s to come here they had a heel magazine release which was later changed to the thumb release common in this country.

Sig's have been and are being adopted by many countries and agencies the Kimber has not been other than a few US PDs, allot of people have had a problem with a Kimber not too many have had problems with Sig's.

You have to shoot both to compare. I have both and each one has its advantage. My Sig however is always my go to gun. My Kimber is the Warrior model wich I like because it does not have any extra crap in it. It is made without firing pin safetys.

I'm like tbtrout, I don't care for the Schwartz safeties in the series II Kimbers. If I could find an older Kimber at a decent price, I'd buy it. Otherwise, I'd take a look at Springfield.

As already mentioned, feel, hold, shoot both pistols. Some people don't like the feel of a SIG. For me, they are the most natural feeling pistol of all. I love the way the P220 feels in my hand.

I own 1911s and I own a SIG P220 Carry. Though I haven't shot them in a ransom rest, accuracy is comparable. As far as I can tell, there's no significant difference between the two.

You mentioned keeping the same platform for wifey. Probably a good idea. The simpler the better in my book!

I own some of both, 2X SIG's (.45 ACP P220, 9m/m P228), and one Kimber
3" Stainless Ultra Carry. While the Kimber has been 100% perfect, my vote
has to go to "MY BACON SAVER" - the SIG .45 caliber P220A. I carried one
for many year's, as a LEO. It NEVER once let me down~! "nuff said"~!

I agree with Ala Dan... if my life depended on it... I put it behind a P-series SIG or a Glock before a 1911. This is just my opinion.
