I know that there is a new thread about AR's all the time, but I am in need of some help. I've been searching for an AR for a while and waiting to get the money to buy one. Well last night i checked out rock river arms website and they have a wide selection and are pretty customizable. From what i've heard they produce a pretty good product. this is kinda what i'm thinking about

with an ambi safety since i'm left handed. I'm an AR newbie and so my question is about the particular detachable carry handle on that one. It's hard to see in the picture so i'm wondering if anyone knows if there is rear iron sight on that. I'm also looking for some suggestions on good optics for it. nothing insanely expensive but i'm not afraid to spend a little money on quality either. i'm open to red dots, magnification, or whatever else you can suggest. Thanks in advance.

The carry handle includes the iron sight. I can make out the elevation dial in the pic.

I can't help you on the optics, the AR iron sights are good.

I really like the iron on the AR, they are awesome and accurate. I guess it depends on what you are going to use the rifle for. I personally enjoy the challenge of shooting the irons at distance, but I also have four ARs and one of them is a long heavy barrelled model that has a scope, and I tend to air that one out pretty good. But with the weight it is nothing more then a bench gun.

My favorite optic is the ACOG, but they are pricey. If you can afford it they are hard to beat in my book and you can choose the one with the magnification that you want. The super high speed ones come with a holo sight on the top for the short range stuff. They also have a balistic drop reticle for the longer stuff.

+1 on the ACOG. The EOTech holosight is a very good option for no magnification red dot sight (and about 1/3 or less the cost of the ACOG, depending on which version of each you are comparing).

Is there anything somewhat similar to the ACOG that doesn't cost like 900 bucks? I love the ACOG but I don't know if i can justify spending that kind of money on optics when I could buy a whole new gun for that money.

Yes, the "tactical carry handle" has the standard A2 rear sight, but has an optics rail in front of it instead of a handle.

In case you're interested, Stag makes left-handed uppers.

For a short range optic either an Eotech or an Aimpoint. Aimpoint options are available that are not that much more costly than an Eotech, and their battery life and controls are much better. That being said, I have both and I'd take the Eotech for speed and the Aimpoint for accuracy.

Bushnell makes an ACOG clone that I beleive is und $200. Check SWFA or Midway under reddots.

There's an extensive thread on the Bushnell Trophy MP on arfcom. While its hooded front gives it an appearance similar to some ACOG models:

It's really not appropriately described as an ACOG clone. A very different sight it is, and I really do like it. IIRC mine cost ~$150.

rra makes good stuff and +1 to the above poster, in addition a carry handle would be pretty worthless without a sight in it.

as far as optics i use eotechs on my personal ar and i love em, you can't go wrong i believe that they are the cream of the crop for red dot type sights.

for something with magnification i would go with an acop the ta31, or for a little less money i would get the nsn. which has the sights on top for cqb engagements.

While it is a semi auto centerfire rifle, the state of minnesota likes to call it an assault weapon or as i've been seeing a lot lately "tactical sporting rifle" and in MN you do need a permit to buy one, but that is not a problem for me b/c I have a permit to purchase and a permit to carry and either will work.

I am aware of the stag left handed AR's and in fact started a thread a while back about them. I'm still considering going with them. No one stocks Stag products and I like to actually feel the product before I buy. Most places around here stock Busmaster and DPMS. There is a store about 20 miles away that carries RRA so I'm thinking about going to check them out.

I'll have to check out that Bushnell. I know they make quality because I've used a 3-10 Bushnell on a hunting rifle before.

If you don't shoot past 400m don't consider the ACOG if the cost is too much for you. There's a reason why they cost so much, they're worth it. If you shoot under 400m go with an Aimpoint, I can't speak highly enough of them.

The ACOG maybe expensive, more than some pay for thier rifles... but I've seen them survive more than a few tours of Iraq. Our Armory just got rid of several that were bought in 2002, they looked like they'd been beaten with hammers, drug through the sand behind a hummer... for giggles we took a few of them to the range and they all zero'd with out problems, even the one with no more fiberoptic tube, and a serious crack in the aluminum body.

What's this BS about a Permit for Assult Rifles in MN... I just bought a Hand gun there in Aug, and homie said I could cash and carry a DPMS .308 that day if I wanted it?

I shoot left handed as well and there is no reason to buy a left-handed AR, other than if you want one. If you add the ambi-safety you are pretty much good to go. I opted for the RRA Elite CAR A4 which is the same as what you posted, although it has a midlength gas system.

Definitely compare the Bushmaster and DPMS - both are good choices. I had the same 3 to choose from locally. The DPMS panther was way overpriced, and the Bushmaster wasn't a midlength and wasn't quite as nice in fit and finish.

Also, the detachable carry hanlde on the RRA models is designed for an Aimpoint optic. It is supposedly at the right height to co-witness an Aimpoint with the irons.

Not trying to offend anyone, but do you happen to have a source for this? I'm in MN, and I've never seen or heard anything to that effect, and I have been thinking about picking up an AR soon. I have a permit to purchase but it's for a handgun not an AR so I don't see how that would qualify, unless it's a restriction that the dealer is imposing and not required by law.

I wouldn't restrict your shopping just to RRA because of the ambi safety. I'm a lefty and can easily manipulate the safety with the tip of either my left thumb or left forefinger.

edit: Bushnell does make a 1.75 x 4X Trophy that is about the same size. I have no idea what the Circle X reticle is though. That may be what I end up mounting on my AR if I can ever find one to look at in person.
