This is really sad, I really feel for the grandpa and the family here. It does seem unnecessary and a preventable mistake for sure. I'd say a shot to the high inner thigh hit the femoral artery. Bad place. Anyway, everyone be safe out there hunting and always ID your target (and aim better when you do). Apply good communication methods with other known hunters...

Grandfather Fatally Shoots Grandson in Deer Hunting AccidentMonday, November 19, 2007

TOWN OF SAXEVILLE, Wis. — A grandfather fatally shot his 18-year-old grandson in northwestern Waushara County during the opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer-hunting season, a warden says.

David R. Ruck from the Saxeville area died at a Neenah hospital after he was shot Sunday morning, Sheriff David R. Peterson said.

"My heart goes out to the family and to the community," said Tim Lawhern, conservation warden and state director of the Hunter Education Administration.

Deputies responded to a report about 8:40 a.m. that a hunter had been shot on private property in the town of Saxeville.

Ruck had been shot in the upper leg and inner groin, Peterson said, adding that the shooter said he mistook Ruck for a deer.

The sheriff's department and state Department of Natural Resources were investigating.

The gun deer season opened Saturday, with an estimated 630,000 hunters participating.

No statewide deer kill figures were reported Sunday.

Sounds to me like grandpa took a 'sound shot' or a 'movement shot'.

Sad. Very sad. Since it was an accident, I hope no criminal charges come from this. Grandpa is going to have a hard enough time living with what happened.

The local TV newscast last night said the kid had wrapped himself up in the brown colored blanket to get warm, strike one.

Then from my assumption Grandpa took a shot at something brown, strike two.

Rules to live by:
1. When hunting during the gun season don't look like a deer, if you have to cover up then use a blaze orange blanket or wear warmer clothes.
2. Be sure of your target. Just because it's brown doesn't mean it's a deer. Could be a cow, a horse, a dog, almost anything.

Sad situation. The grandpa is probably devastated and will probably be for life. The kid's family is probably devastated as well, got no idea how things will go for them in the future. Just sad.

My father & older brother taught me to hunt, as a youngster. The rule was to not only identify the target, but carefully pick the exact anatomical point you wanted to strike with the bullet. No exceptions, when hunting with a rifle.

Now, wingshooting birds with a scattergun had a little less strict shot placement criteria, but the identification of a safe shooting lane and an actual, flying target were still basic requirements. :D

As a new grandpa, I cannot imagine the pain this man is feeling, and will feel for the rest of his life. I'd much rather never score a hit on another deer than risk injuring anyone, much less a child or grandchild, through my negligence. :(

Thoughts & prayers to this family.

I know that I would be. It would be bad enough losing one of my grandkids but knowing that I was the direct cause.. I don't think I could live with that. My heart is breaking just thinking about their loss. May God Bless them all!!

"Blaze Orange" is the ONLY color that should be worn during deer gun season.

I remember a story from my youth about a squirrel hunter that was killed by accident. Seems he had stopped for lunch, sitting against a tree, and took a .22LR round just behind the ear. DO NOT wear a raccoon-skin hat, complete with tail, while squirrel hunting.

I do not ever advocate 'Sound/Movement shooting. Too many ways for something to go wrong, as this story shows.

That's sad. Far too many people hunt by the rule of "If its brown, its down."

Hi Sam,

I think tragic would be a better description. My children are just babies but I can't imagine how I would feel if one were the victim of such an accident. That poor grandfather, one moment of carelessness he will mentally replay for the rest of his life. Que lastima.

It wouldn't have to be if those idiots out there would learn to identify their target and whats beyond it.

This is grade school shooters stuff, he should know that by now.

When firing at a target animal, a competient hunter will not only know what it is, but also what sex it is (the law in many states, bucks only, etc.) and where the shot struck the target. I've heard of so many tragic stories such as the one in the OP that could have prevented by simple steps. We must be very careful who we hunt with, and how we present ourselves in the woods. Life is too short!:(

Reconstruction

Thousands of hunters in the woods.

Man shoots his grandson.

"Thought he was a deer."

Were they hunting together? If so, why didn't each know where the other was. If not, what were they doing that close together?

There's enough missing data in this story to make me squint.

There's certainly more going on than was reported.

Waiting for the "rest of the story."

As a grandparent I cannot imagine how the shooter will get through another day.

This just goes to show how careful people need to be when shooting guns. Hunting or plinking, the risks are just as high.

had one here like that a few years back loaded gun in car nd hits a kid standing outside car in head. dead. its like the yearly carload of high school kids that we get every year

Man...

Sad. This is why I wear hunter orange even during muzzleloader season when it isn't required. Too many times I've heard stories that start, 'I thought I heard a deer...'
