Rule Four - "Be sure of your target and what is beyond it".

(And yes, the Sheriff really does have that name! :D )

From The Citizen, Auburn, NY (http://www.auburnpub.com/articles/2005/11/21/news/local_news/news02.txt):

Weedsport hunter shot in leg

A 29-year-old Weedsport man was shot in the upper left leg Saturday evening by a member of his deer hunting party.

Tim Spingler, of Oakland Road, was shot by 49-year-old Robert Hart, also of Weedsport, who reported the incident to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office at about 5:12 p.m. Saturday.

Hart told the sheriff's office that he spotted a deer in the field and shot once at the deer from about 60 yards away. Spingler, who was located beyond the point that Hart spotted the deer, then called out to Hart that he had been shot, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

The 12-gauge shotgun slug entered the victim's inner thigh and exited his outer thigh. Other members of the hunting party were summoned via cell phone to assist the victim.

He was stabilized and transported from the wooded area to the nearest roadway, where he was treated at the scene by the Weedsport Fire Department's EMTs. Spingler was then transported to University Hospital in Syracuse, where he underwent surgery and is presently listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the sheriff's office.

No charges have been made at this point. The investigation is being handled by the sheriff's office and the New York State Environmental Conservation Police.

In the press release, Sheriff Rob Outhouse encouraged all hunters to wear high visibility clothing and to stay in contact with all members of their hunting party to prevent similar shooting accidents.

He fired a 12ga slug at a deer that was 60 yds away. How far beyond the deer was the man that was hit? What is the effective range of a 12ga slug?

Todays slugs are accurate to 100 yards and some of the high tech slugs claim to have 200 yard accuracy depending on the gun, so I would be willing to say that some slugs are still deadly up to around 300 or more yards if the shooter holds high. Makes you wonder with todays slugs why some states still have shotgun only hunting.

If the hunter had used a rifle, it could have been a near COM. The good thing about using slugs is they drop on shorter range, so hitting someone far behind your target is less probable.

To me, the bigger stupidity is not knowing where the rest of the hunting party was set up and not having "planned" lanes of fire. That is always our standard when we hunt as a group for JUSt this reason... I "guess" if there is a bright side, he didn't kill the fella.:cuss:

Ouch. That hurts just thinking about it.

Boy, you can say that again! Imagine a 1" hole all the way thru your thigh!?!
