Is anyone aware of any publicly accessible shooting ranges and/or training opportunities in the state of Kentucky? If you know of one please post its name and location along with any fees or membership requirements you are aware of.

I ask this question not only as a reference for myself and others, but in response to a current thread regarding required training to carry a firearm. Not the first of those I might add. While few would argue the benefits of advanced training and regular practice, some seem to feel that one shouldn’t be carrying unless they meet these standards. I’m not looking to rehash that argument here, but it is my contention that many of the gun owners in Kentucky do not get additional practice and training due to the lack of facilities. I get the impression, from reading threads here, that states like Florida, Virginia, and many others have public ranges on every corner, but the closest one I know of is over two hours away.

I believe that having decent facilities available would not only encourage more people to get further training and practice, but would bring more into gun ownership to begin with. Many more people would be gun owners if only they had a place to go and someone to teach them how to use one responsibly.

Thanks for the link arflattop, I had forgotten about the NRA list. Looking through it I noticed several disappointments though. First, they seem to be more common in the western half of the state. Many were also listed as private as well. One thing that jumped out at me was that the closest publicly available handgun range to Lexington was in Livingston, about an hour’s drive south. This leaves a rather large void around Kentucky’s second largest city.

Cave Run Lake

There is an outdoor range at Cave Run Lake.
Fee is $5.00 per car.
Available shots up to 200 yards.
You bring everything you need, although there is most usually plywood and such left there for attaching paper targets.
Nice benches with swivel seats and a tin roof overhead.
About 60 miles East of Lexington coming down I64.
You can PM me for more exact directions if you want.

Don't know where you are in Ky. but it must not be anywhere near Louisville because we have several to choose from and most, not all, of Ky is less than 2 hours away unless you drive like I used to. Open Range in Crestwood near LaGrange, Ky. Sport Shooters in Louisville. Bluegrass Range in Louisville. Knob Creek in "not really" West Point, Ky. Probably more not listed here.

Rock Hill Gun Range, 4 miles down the road from Whittakers Gun's. Open Saturday and Sunday with scheduled CCW training classes.
Shotgun, pistol and rifle ranges with rifle to 300 yards.
Go to WWW.WHITTAKERGUNS.COM and check out range on right side menu.
Also check out Whittaker Gun's if you go there.

The best kept secret

I have lived in the Lexington area for 8 years now and the best kept secret is the Blue Grass Sportsman League. http://www.bgslinc.com/

I have been a member there for 5 years and it is one of the finest places to shoot in the part of the country. Even though it is private, their membership is never at capacity and you can get in very easily. Just apply on line.

I suspect that the lack of ranges in many parts of the state has to do with a lack of interest in a formal place to shoot. Having lived in Ky my whole life and been a shooting since before I was in Kindergarden myself and most of the shooters I know shoot on private property. The downside to this is for people without access to such private property. I also know that at least in the area I am in there does not seem to be much interest in taking training courses. Our neighbor opened up a legion post and shooting club right up the road from us and just recently had to shut the doors and sell the place. He had a really nice set up with both pistol and rifle ranges and really nice club house and bar but the only class people took was the CCW.

joebogey, if you are near cave run lake your near my regular stomping ground. My friends and myself go swimming there frequently during the summer.

I ride my scoot up there every now and again to watch the ...ah.... boats. Yeah that's it. I watch the boats.

I've also heard great things about the Blue Grass Sportsman's League.....I have some friends who are members

Thanks for the responses everyone. I just thought I would take a moment to express my appreciation, and to bump it up front again.

Me I have a yard and 50 Acers of woods to shoot on. I used my above ground pool to test bullets But wife won't allow that any more.:D

Nice to see so many other Kentucky people on here. The only places I know of are the one's around Louisville that some people mentioned earlier. Everyone else I know that shoots goes out to the countryside and shoots out there.
