Will be flying to MD for a week and would like to take an AR for a friend to shoot. Are there any restrictions against taking one into the state (20" heavy barrel, flat top, 6pos stock)? Also are 30 round mags ok to take there temporarily or am I limited to 20 rounders?
Same with a Glock- is 15 round capacity ok or should I take a 10 round compact?
Thanks.

Heavy Barrel version is considered a normal rifle....you're good to go. There is a ban on the transfer of mags with a capacity of more than 20 rnds....posession of so called high cap mags is ok just dont give/sell to anyone. To be safe you may want to take the 20's and leave the 30s at home.

If it were a std/m4gery then it would be considered a Regulated Firearm by state law.

Md's pistol laws are much much worse.....you are only allowed to transport a pistol in Md from your legal residence to the range or gunshop....period unless you have a CCW and forget about getting one in Md unless you carry a lot of money or are a politician.

Anyplace you are staying (hotel etc) can be considered a residence as I understand it legally.....you do not want to get stopped just driving around town with a pistol in the car without reasonably being able to demonstrate you were going to/from a gunshop/range and your residence.

They are pretty much mental about gun laws in Md.....its a bliss ninny hand wringing Socialist Dem state.

Hi!

I lived in MD for 4 years recently and dealt with all this a lot. MD's laws concerning regulated firearms and standard-capacity (over 20) round magazines cover TRANSFER of these items, not posession.

If he wants to buy the same model of gun you have then he'll have to go through the waiting period like any handgun or other regulated firearm. He cannot buy, or receive in any way, magazines of more than 20 rds. capacity in the state of MD...but he may possess them if he already owns them. (It is legally unclear whether he could buy them out of state and bring them back with him...most shooters I know do this regularly.)

Be careful about transporting the gun -- locked in a case and out of sight/reach is going to save a world of hassle -- but you won't be breaking any laws to go shooting with your buddy.

If you go to a public range I suspect you're going to get some cross-eyed looks with a black rifle in MD...good luck.

My in-laws live in Md., last time I was there my father-in-law warned me not to carry or bring my .357 to the state again as they have some very nasty laws on the books now.It seems you can travel through the state with locked and ammo separated carry (fed carry laws),but you can't stop anywhere even for gas.The only exception is a legally sanctioned shoot and you better be ready to prove it.They just bought a house in Tenn. and will be out by the first of the year.:D

Yes and No.

If he wants to buy a handgun or standard weight barreled AR then YES because these are deemed by the state to be Regulated Firearms.

Any HBAR AR (Heavy Barreled AR) is a white form rifle...in and out in 20 mins like any normal rifle.

Thanks for the help. The firearms will only go to the range and back, once my "buddy" (girlfriend) gets out west she has already given me a request for an AR with purple furniture.

Totally depends on which range, and its not as bad as you think. I've never had a problem at either of the DNR ranges or the indoor range I've shot at and all the ROs love to oogle my M4.

Come on down! I used to live in SE Baltimore County (Edgemere). After getting married I bugged out here to NE Tennessee. Holy hell it's great. We can still buy guns out of the news paper. Screw the Sun Paper. Even better after a 8hr class 200 bucks and some fingerprints you can CCW. No need to fill out an application to prove you have a butt load of money or a judicial statement saying your life is in danger to get it.

I am from MD and have seen plenty of Black Rifles at the range and no one looked twice.

With all due respect...He!! NO! MD has tons of shooters and tens if not hundreds of thousands of "black" rifles ... of all descriptions. One of my friends down there is an SOT 3 dealer with hundreds of toys to make you drool down your shirt and he shoots one or two days every week at several different ranges.

MD has SUCKY laws. But if you get slightly outside of DC, the people are pretty level-headed...and pi$$ed about the laws. Truly an occupied country, as it were.

And, yes, as has been stated, all heavy barrled ARs (used to be just the Colt HBAR, but that's been changed) are over-the-counter transactions. Just the "standard" or pencil barrels that are "regulated."

Glad I'm GONE!

Yes, we have black rifles. Lots of them.

When transporting a handgun it must be enclosed in a holster or case and unloaded.

A rifle need not be cased, but it must be unloaded.

I've compiled the state laws on transporting in this thread

Lastly you can bring into the state as many 30 round magazines as you wish, just don't give any to your friends while you're here.
