Went out deer hunting today for the first time. About 75 yards away from the truck we ran across two deer in the woods. Lined up a doe at 60 yards and let one rip out of my Remmy 700. I'll post the pics when I get them.

Deer hunting is supposed to be a lot harder than that.

Tell that to my brother who over the past 10 years hasn't spent more than a total of 8 hours in the woods deer hunting yet always seems to be out of the woods by 9:00 with a deer usually over 200 lbs.

I think he's part salt lick.

Great going on your first hunt. Even though it was a doe it was still a great hunt....good eating. I know alot of people that killed some big bucks on their first hunt. I hunted several years before I got a decent wall hanger.

Been hunting for 16 years, never got a deer. I hate you. California sucks for deer hunting, unless you have access to private land. I don't. Good job, and good eating!

Still waiting for the pictures to get emailed to me. The doe was about 150lbs and I was hunting for the meat. We saw a spike and a 4 pointer about 5min after the first shot, but I decided they needed some time to grow.

Oh yes pigspitter, you're good and hooked. Now, like the rest of us, you will hunt for the next 19 years deerless, pigless, bearless, coonless, and whatever else less trying to duplicate your first deer kill. You will try new weapons, smell like deer pee, with a never ending list of new loads, seats, trucks, horses, mules, stands, blinds, decoys, rangefinders, scopes, knives, pants, shirts, boots, glasses, gps units, compasses, axes, and hunting partners that will range from drunk to drugged to stupid to lazy to ever so much better than you. Welcome, welcome, welcome to our world.
Congratulations, you'll love every minute of it!!! heehee

Yes, congrats on your first deer. I was lucky enough to do the same back in November. Now I am after coyote to fill the void until next deer/elk season. Once you have been bitten with the bug, its impossible to walk away. :what:

Congratulations! Enjoy the venison...nothin' else like it, save chicken! (jk)That is great that you got a deer the first time you went hunting...mine was the same way and that was in OH - only one out of 4 they say gets a deer for OH, [according to my uncle])

My uncle is one of those "show up and get some deer" ones when others have been out all day, but I don't know, outside of being a better shot than others, it mostly boils down to being in the right spot at the right time. At least it is fun trying to get them anyway so you really never loose out (hmmm... that wallet sure seems to though)

last time I was there it was almost "easy pickin's" - though no big bucks spotted. Never bothered with private land with all the BLM, public, and National forest lands.
