I have a new Leupold rimfire scope, 2-7x, $200. I have it mounted as far back as it will go and still don't have enough eye relief. I have to push my head forward to get full field of view. This is mainly for bench shooting so I don't really need full field of vision, but one would think for $200....

What is it mounted on?
How is it mounted?
Post a picture maybe?

The VX-I 2-7x28mm Rimfire scope should have 3.8" inch eye relief at 2x and 3" inch at 7x.

Thats about par for the course for any variable scope of that power range.

It's in Leupold rings. I had a Simmons .22 Mag scope on this rifle before this scope came and no problem with eye relief. This is essentially unusable as it is. To make matters worse, they guy I talked to at Leupold was a total jerk. he actually said, "Maybe it's just the way you are built." Here's a picture.

That setup looks like it should work. Maybe it is even a little too far back. Hold a white cardboard behind the ocular lens and measure the distance that give you about an 8mm iris then adjust the scope position or your hold to get that same distance. If the distance is not 2-3 inches, something is definitely wrong inside the scope and Leupold will fix it. Higher power scopes tend to have less eye relief and less eye relief range, but a 2-7X should work nearly anywhere between the rings on a receiver mount.

No doubt about it being too far back for me.

That sucker would whack me in the eye on a centerfire gun that kicked a little. And I'm a short fat guy!

Are you getting your head down on the stock with a good cheekweld on the comb?

I just don't understand it at all?

I can see where it would be easy to conclude I just don't know what I'm doing. But I put an old Simmons 4x on the same rifle and it was far superior. No problem with eye relief and in fact, a much clearer image. So I think it isn't my eye or my cheek weld but something else. BTW, I called Optics Planet and they gave me a very hard time. I pointed out that their website says 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed but they still wanted to argue. Finally they said return it.

Send it to Leupold. My guess is the shipping will be no more than a return to Optics Planet. It will be returned in 2 weeks or less ( mine always have) and you can be sure when returned it will be in "as new" condition.

as far back as it will go and still don't have enough eye relief.

If the scope is OK, there are a number of companies selling "offset" rings, which will allow more room in one direction. They're common enough you should be able to find a pair easily.

You can also get your eye closer by shortening the butt pad or the buttstock.

I have an 03-a3 and have that problem as the only mount is a one piece Redfield style. Leupold and Nikon Monarch with extended rings (both) still leave the scope 3/4" too far forward.

Solved it with a 60s Weaver scope. Configeration is all together different than the new 'compact' ones.
