Any Texas CHL Holders remember the exact course of fire for qualification?

I recall it was fired from the 3, 7 and 15 yard lines, but can't remember how many rounds from each and in what sequence.

:fire: dang, it is hot in Dallas

Don’t hold me to this (it’s been a good while) but I think that is 2-3-2-3-5-5 at 3 and 7 yards and two groups of five at 15 yards. Why the goofy sequence I’ve never figured out.

DNS, that's the style target I shot 4 years ago. This is that style I shot June 14th, this year. You'll note that head shots are back, but not recommended. Center mass is were you aim. You have to be a really bad shot not to have passed by the time you complete the 3 & 7 yard part.

Thanks

Thanks both for the welcome and information.

I am about to undertake something I swore I would never do, teach a woman to shoot and buy her a pistol.

Could be very hazardous to my well being and health-------:what:

I wanted her to learn with the exact course of fire she will experience at qualification time as repeating it over and over seems to be her best learning tool.

She has picked out the semi-automatic she wants, a Bersa .380 Conceal Carry. I was going to buy her a 5 shot Chief's Special or a knockoff, put she insists on a small semi-automatic.

Anybody had any experience with this weapon, good-bad? After listening to her opinion on it being cute and small I was going to buy her a Walther PPK, but when she saw the cost difference she insists on the Bersa.

Thanks again, DallasCop2566 a.k.a. Poor Old Roy

The sequence is goofy but the passing score is pretty simple to hit.

We had more folks disqualified for not following the RO's instructions than for any other reason.

DallasCop, you just brought up something very important in qualification. If she uses a revolver, that's the only style handgun she may carry with her CHL. If, OTOH, she uses a semi-auto, she may carry either a semi or a revolver. her TR-100 will indicate which and that will also be reflected on her license as SA or NSA.

Yes, I noted she's going to use a Bersa .380ACP.

Welcome to the THR family!!!

and as csmkersh said, depending on the type of gun, it will be reflected on her license. As for the Bersa. I have one of those and my wife is the one that actually uses that one. I like that gun, never had any problems with it. Good luck

Went through this with my wife. Start untimed and stay at 3 yards until she is hitting all 5's. Then repeat at 7, and 15. Once she's confident in her aim at the different ranges, introduce the timed course of fire. Most folks shoot it way to fast and score much worse than they should. Like has been said its pretty hard for anyone who does minimal practices not to pass without even firing at the 15 yard targets.

Definitely have her shoot it with an auto, a note for the DA/SA shooters, you are supposed to decock or apply external safties at the start of every stage so with the Bersa make sure that DA first shot stays at least in the 4 zone everytime.

Also no helping hands are allowed loading and unloading -- since my wife at 5'1" 105 lbs can't rack the slide of pretty much anything, I got her a Beretta 85 Cheetah .380; really broke my heart to pay nearly $500 for a .80, but I lover her so she's worth it! It does single action cocked and locked (no decocker) and the tip up barrel means she never has to rack the slide. She had no trouble passing shooting 236/250 if I recall.

csmkersh, I have never seen the green target except online. Both of my previous quals have been on the blue targets. My buddy just qualified here in North Texas a couple of weeks ago and specifically noted that the target had changed from the Blue to the Green.

Interesting.

DNS, about half my class this past June had blue targets and half green. But all were the same design as the one in my post above.

My target from 2004 is blue but has the 7 to X ring style in the link you provided.

I didn't remember the sequence, I just remember that it is 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards. You really have to either not know anything at all or be blind to fail that test. I think most people could just look down the barrel and point and still pass.

After saying that, I ask myself why they even have that target requirement, but then I think what if someone was carrying a concealed pistol and couldn't hit that target at 3 yards? At least the idea of a shoot test gets people to practice just a little bit. You hate to require people to do that, and I wish we didn't have to.

I don't recall the exact course of fire, but it involves a lot of partial loading of magazines. If you know the basic principles of shooting, you should be alright. If you've ever shot the gun before, you're almost guaranteed to pass(assuming you follow the RO's directions)

I've heard a lot of positive stuff about the Bersa .380
PPKs are cool, but I've heard of reliability issues with the S&W ones, and the old german ones are both A) very expensive. and B) legendary for slide-bite.
