So to start, this is NOT my gun, but had to snap some pics for y'all to see this...sorry the quality sucks, cell pics. And yes, I realize i'm bleeding, thanks to the mainspring on my 1911

STORY: I'm at the range today breaking in my 1911 and was next to a couple of "seasoned" guys who admittedly were inexperienced and hadn't shot in ~35yrs. So they asked me a few questions here and there, we reviewed range safety 101, and they admired my 1911 After a while one gentleman with a Glock 23 (.40 s&w) was asking me if I knew why his gun wouldnt chamber JHP at all. I told him to check his feed ramp/magazine/ammo/breach/etc. He rendered the deer in the headlights look as he slowly handed me his weapon. I stripped his weapon and had to manipulate the barrel out of the slide (didnt just fall out) I was baffled as to the cause, but could tell that well, something wasnt quite right Here's what I saw...Glock docs have at it!

Is that brass in backwards, or did the rim blow itself off/ extractor pull it off.

That's a weird problem whatever happened.

Yep, thats exactly what it is.

Could be caused by a pressure excursion, bad brass, or just a filthy chamber.

Older Glocks could fire slightly out of battery by as much as 1/16" or more. If the chamber is full of gunk the rounds are not fully seating in the chamber and holding the gun open slightly, which gives less case support.

If the guy didn't have his eyebrows singed, I'd think it was just brittle / bad brass that cracked at the rim when the extractor yanked on it.

From your picture, it looks like an old crack running about 1/3 way around the case there by the feed ramp. The other 2/3 way around looks like fresh & bright brass that just broke.

I didnt try and pull it out or anything. It looked more like a mushroom effect of brass around the breach. For the record, he was shooting it like this with FMJ!!!!!

Those in bold are warning signs of misusing a firearm.

First of all, there's a reason why there are basic gun courses and gun safety courses available. If those sesoned dudes didn't inquire your help, then I can't imagine other shinanigans they'll get themselves into.

Bottomline: Take a class and know your weapon.

That is simply not possible.

Unless he was perhaps shooting 9mm in his FoTay?

And even then I doubt it is possible with a the broken case stuck in the chamber.

Soak in Draino and it'll clear up on it's own. :D

weird. Maybe a 9mm to begin with? Just a thought, but they can expand like mad if they fire in a 40. That would certainly cause the case-head failure. And if they were firing 9mm, it is certainly possible it would chamber in that.

Regardless: Yikes.

CountGlockula - they DID inquire my help, they were actually very honest and sincerely wanted help. I think it was the highroad thing to do and educate them so that they didnt do something unsafe, etc. and quit shooting all together. They werent the typical old fogey that has a chip on the shoulder and "knows what to do" automatically. We discussed 2nd Amendment issues as well and they were brought up to speed on the recent news.

he was using all new .40 s&w, no 9mm involved. Looked like a weak casing to me.
