Best target ammo for 22?

A lot of the Bullseye shooters are using Eley Sport or Aguila std velocity. Aguila uses the same priming system as the Eley.

You might try Federal 711 or 714 std velocity or Winchester T22.

I can't recommend Remington's target .22 ammo. I've always had lots of misfires with it.

I have had good luck with CCI sv in my Mod 41. Stay away from PMC way to many misfires. I have tried many other types but always go back to CCI.

There is NO way someone can give you the right .22 brand for your gun. You really need to try them all. I also have a model 41 that I use for Bullseye. CCI worked best for me, but that might not be the case for you. Sometimes even the most expensive Eley shoots worse than the cheapest Federal value box. Try all you can and shoot the one that groups best...and that you can afford of course.

You may want to go with standard velocity ammo. I believe thats what the 41 is designed to use. Check out rimfirecentral.com I'm sure some one over there can steer you in the right direction.

Wolf ammo works the best for me. Aguila sub-sonic is second in line( for hand gun, my 10/22 hates sub-sonic.)

Gun's preference...

governs all, Harmonic. Eb Minor has it right; you just have to buy a box of a lot of different likely candidates and shoot each box--carefully, avoid shooter fatigue and other factors; you are testing the gun/ammo combination, not your own skill here--until you find the fodder that yr particular M 41 prefers.

I shoot bullseye with a 41 myself, and get good results with CCI sv also, but YMMV. There's more art than science to it. I like the 41 a lot.

My personal rule is to buy whatever ammo the gun likes--if it likes caviar, and I'm in competition, I feed it caviar. If it prefers dog food, I feed it dog food.

With rimfire pistol competition, ammo cost is the least of your worries.

Like the others have said, you will have to try a bunch of different ammo. From what I hear (owners can correct me if I am wrong) 41's can be quite finicky when it comes to ammo, and what works well through someone elses 41 may not work worth a crap in yours. So your best bet is to buy a bunch of different ammo and try them all out. I do know that one of the guys at our club that shoots a 41 runs Eley through it, but like I said yours may not like it.

When I was shooting Bullseye regularly, I'd practice with CCI Standard Velocity and would sometimes shoot matches with Eley.

Both brands of ammunition functioned fantastically in a SW 46 and later Walther GSP.

I've also known many shooters who use the Wolf .22 ammunition and have had excellent results. Before I stopped shooting Bullseye with any regularity, I had noticed some shooters had switched to Aguila, but I have no firsthand shooting experience with it other than a box or two, and it seemed to run fine.

Try different brands of SV, go with the one that works %100 reliably in your 41.

CCI standard velocity is pretty much the " standard " for reliable function, accuracy and cost.

Unless you are shooting Bullseye 50yd slowfire don't waste $ on high end $$$ > $25 Brick SV/match ammo, most cheap 22 standard velocity ( CCI, Aguila, Fed 714, Rem Target, Win T22 , fiocci etc ) is more than capable of X ring accuracy at 25yds even 50 if you do your part.

My High Standard is (was when last carefully tested) more accurate with T-22 than any other "popularly priced" ammo and better than some match grade high priced spread.

Haven't worked with my M41 real hard, that old Supermatic just shoots SO well.

A shot a friend's 41 recently with my ammo. It shot much better with mine than his. Mine was Fed Auto Match...relatively inexpensive and very accurate. Give it a try!

I've had good luck with PMC, I think it is made on the Aguila line and Eley primed. I shoot a lot of Wolf too. Used CCI Green tag too, but it is pricey.

As others have said, the most accurate ammo in your particular gun could be just about anything, and you need to run some careful testing with a variety of brands (and hope that the gun doesn't decide it only likes Eley Tenex!).

If you find that you get the results you want with Aguila SV, take a look at the ammo available from CMP, which is made by Aguila. I used to run CCI SV in my GSP, but when the price headed for the stratosphere I looked for an alternative and found the CMP ammo to be equally accurate for nearly half the price.

By all accounts, the vast majority of the field shooting .22 in the upcoming Olympics will be firing RWS R50/R100 or Eley Tenex.

My gun likes Tenex and on match day I shoot it because every point matters.

Try four or five different match grade ammunitions and see what groups, then see what functions best over a 100 rounds fired then you have your ammo.

There are plently of different grades of Eley and some are pretty inexpensive when compared to Tenex. My gun works fine with CCI std vel and shoots a little left with CCI.

If you try 5 kinds of ammo all will most likely shoot different. When you find one that groups good buy all that lot number you can, because when you run out and buy the same brand again they will most likely be different then the ones you tested out.

I have seen an older man at the range test all kinds of 22 ammo and you would be surprised how much difference there is between brands and lot numbers.

Most of the guys around here shoot CCI SV's with their 41's for bullseye. I'm shooting a Ruger and have had good luck with ELEY Pistol Target, CCI sv's and even the Federal AUTOMATCH target that comes in the 325 count carton.

Like everyone has said: different guns and shooters require different ammo. I shoot a High Standard that likes CCI SV ok, but refuses to eat WCs. I've tried spring replacements and it made little or no difference.

Late. My apologies. Smith 41's(they're the only semi-auto pistol that S&W makes well) are great pistols(wouldn't trade mine for anything. Not even for a 1928 vintage Thompson SMG), but all of 'em are extremely particular about what ammo they'll both shoot well and cycle the action. Moreso than any other .22 target pistol. It's just the way they are.
No two of 'em will shoot the same ammo the same way either.
You absolutely must try as many brands as you can to find the ammo your 41 will shoot well and cycle the action. The price or manufacture of said ammo means nothing either.
Mine will shoot Remington Target ammo and IVI Standard Velocity(don't think you can get it Stateside) and nothing else. High velocity ammo cycles, but not always with great accuracy. HV nor Hypervelocity ammo will not hurt your pistol. Smith 41's are regularly used for hunting where it's legal with no fuss.

Wolf Match Extra

I have a pair of 41s and I have been very happy with Dicks Sporting Goods Federal Champion Target. (It has to say Target on the box). It is only sold at Dicks I believe.

I have found it to be inexpensive and good. $20/500

(They also like Lapua, Eley, and Green Tag, of course) But I can't tell the difference in them so I go with the cheaper.

I've also had good experience with the Federal Champion...it's what I use in my Ruger Intl. Mark II pistol w/2-power Leupold scope for 100-yd shooting. I have to use an 8-inch diameter bullseye to sight on, as the cross hairs totally hide anything much smaller...but I get 3-1/2" groups with this inexpensive ammunition. I find it to be very consistent, unlike the Remington, which gives me about 15% 5" fliers. The Federal drops only about 3" from 50-yds to 100-yds.
