My "buffalo huntin' rig

1881 vintage rifle, and 1984 hunting horse.

I need a cleaning rod and a front leaf spring!

Caliber? .45-70 and 360ci

Forget the rifle, I want the truck! (though the rifle is cool) It was still AMC then wasn't it?

Those were great, my granddad had one of those.

I once owned one like that.

It was an 1864 Springfield caplock in .58.

My father traded an old jeep for it when I was about 13.

I passed it on to a collector a few decades back
so it'd be better cared for.

Fine rifle, it was. Can't imagine what it must have been like
to be limited to one shot when the second one
didn't involve break it open and drop in another cartridge.

Agreed on the truck and the rifle.
I'd also take the sandbag over the shoe box but I suppose that a set of crossed shooting sticks would be more historically accurate than either.

Well, since there ain't no buffalo to hunt(there are a few around here), I should have named the pic " My plinking rig".

Yeh, Chrysler took over AMC's operation in 1987. Dropped the full size trucks then, but kept the full size Wagoneer for a few years longer.

I bought the truck last May. I'm going to restore it to nice. Not all that bad the way it is. I drive it around all the time, running gears good. Just needs some body work and paint, a few items inside the cab, and will be good to go. And yes, not much room for "long Tom" muskets inside!

The shoe box likely came from "Old Navy", not sure. I tried wearing womens shoes for awhile, but they just don't cut it, and rarely come in my size. Womens underwear is better, can find that stuff to fit, except them "T back" pantys are no good on a hike!

I like the old Springfield! I just got it in June. Never fired a trapdoor rifle before. Chance encounter doing a good deed, and got a chance to buy the rifle cheap.

It needed cleaning bad, but is in surprisingly good shape, with a sharply rifled bore that wears some pitting.

I was amazed at the old rifles accuracy! The rear sight was broken when I got it. I scrounged some parts off ebay, and used correct parts to rebuild the rear sight. Took the thing out to shoot, and it was dead on with smokeless 405gr "Cowboy" ammo! Just as accurate as a fellow could hope for.

The Springfield Armorys quality cannot be denied. Even on this abused rifle, the superb fit and high quality of manufacture is evident.

This is my second blackpowder cartridge rifle, the first being a Nepal cache Martini Henry Mk.II from 1889.

I like the trapdoor better, although the Martini Henry is a slicker, more modern design.

As long as you don't wear G-string to the range. :D

No, I really just wear normal "man" underwear. Sometimes inside out and backwards!

I thought inside out and backward IS the normal way for a man to wear his underwear.

Nice rifle. You can hunt American bison in some places, which are *more or less* free range animals (very large ranches), if you pay the fee. Maybe I should say "almost" or "sort of" free range....

VERY nice lloking rifle. If it shoots as good as it looks, and is as much fun to shoot as I suspect, you should be a very happy person.

I've been shooting Cabela's "bulk .45-70", which consists of 5 boxes of Ultramax Cowboy .45-70 smokless ammo. with an empty generic box to fill space inside a plastic ammo box.

That stuff doen't even kick! Supposidly fires a 405gr bullet at 1100fps. About what the old military reduced carbine load was supposed to be.

My 12 year old son, a veteran of shooting the .577/.450 martini Henry commented on the lack of recoil as compared to the Martini Henry.

No, I'm aware of the trapdoors reputation for weakness. The Ultramax stuff from Cabela's seems to be about as mild a factory load as can be found. The brass is Starline, and I'm saving up a bunch for future use.

Only issue with the Ultramax ammo is it seems to leave a lot of powder or filler in the bore? I would say it's powder, but not sure. I made a small pile of it from the leftovers in the action/breech, and it will burn! so likely powder.

I will say the stuff is accurate. Hits the target at 100 meters dead on, but it is fairly lethargic. I would be surprised if it actually turns the 1100 fps they claim. At closer ranges from a rest(womans shoe box, not), can touch the shots together.

I see no reason to pursue any other load than Ultramax's 405gr. Cowboy load. The rifle likes it. Doesn't seem likely to split the rifle open like a banana! Is non corrosive, so kind to my already existing pitted bore. Also not just horrifyingly expensive, although it ain't cheap.

Only on the fourth day."

Won't that put the brown spot in the front?:uhoh:

yep man, always gotta remember when putting on your shorts:

"brown in the back, yellow in the front"

I don't have a trapdoor Springfield, but I do have an old Jeep. 1956 Willys CJ5. Sat in storage for 30 years, currently under restoration to showroom stock.
