Which is better for deer: 150 gr or 170 gr soft point? Range would be 100 to 150 yards max. The rifle is a H&R single shot currently sighted in for Leverrevoloution rounds, but I'm to cheap to buy them. Would the 150 be closer to the current point of aim? Thanks

Both the 150 and 170 are fine for deer. My personal preference is for the 150-grainer because I think it expands a tad better (lighter bullet at higher velocity) but I doubt any deer could ever tell the difference. Both are very lethal.

The sighting for the Leverevolution will be unique to that bullet. It could be close, or not close, to either of the others. Only way to tell is to shoot some.

Good luck !

i recently got some 150gr hollow points.....i didnt even know tey sold .30-30 hollow points

im gonna try them this year

I use Winchester 150 grain Hollow Points. I think its the CXP2 ammo. Its very accurate in my 94 model Winchester and worked great on my last deer. :D

I too favor the w/w 150 hp's. They are more accurate out of my rifle than the remington and every deer I've shot didn't go over 30 yds. I've been thinking for some time now about trying the hornandy's new 160 gr. which seems to have merit. Maybe this year.

I tried every brand and weight that I can find (afford) to see which one grouped the tightest through my Marlin 336.

I settled for Winchester 150gr Silvertips and they will flat out knockdown a Whitetail at 150yds.

hallow points where did you get those. do they sell those for reloading. never seen hallow points for a 30-30

Hey Yo2slick...

Did the bullet pass all the way through the deer ? What range was the shot ?
Shawnee, its was about a 25 yard shot. I was in a ladder stand about 15 feet high. Yes the bullet went through beautifully! A clean entry, took care of the heart and lungs and a very impressive exit wound. Couldn't have asked for anything more.

It'll cost more to test two--or more--new types of ammo than it would to just stick with the Leverevolution that it's already sighted in for. I, personally, will never use anything but Leverevolution in my 30-30, at least once I've burned through all the other ammo I've stockpiled through the years.

i used the 150s alot.killed lots with both the 170s and 150s but.the 150 did better at droping them sooner, here In Pa, if they run, after you hit one,and it doesnt go down fast, someone else will shoot in the air,and clam it,Been thier more then once,But If i still used my ole 94,I would use a 125gr,or even 120,reloading that is,maybe even using the newer plastic tip bullets, and turn it into a 2 shot shooter.
