My friend has some livestock,(rabbits, goats, and poultry). Something big, about the size of a labrodor retriever, was seen ripping open the rabbit hutches and eating them. We think it is a cat because my friend went out to feed them about 3 AM, saw a large animal, and assaulted it with a shovel. It gave off more of a cat scream rather than a moan of a dog. He lives in a in a slightly urban area, so shooting it may be a problem. We would rather trap it and "execute" it descreatly....if possible. Do you fine fellows have any ideas they will be much appreciated.

Have you called your county's animal control people and asked them what to do? They'd probably be happy to set some traps for it; the humane kind.

Where does your friend live? If he's east of the Mississippi, he better check with his state fish & game department before doing ANYTHING. Pumas (AKA cougars, or mountain lions) are a protected species in the eastern half of the US.

We live in Kentucky. And yes we did report it to a park ranger, who lives on his street actually. But this is Ky, the Feds don't do anything until something dratsic happens. But I think according to KY law, if it is killing your livestock or crops, it's free game.

Some sort of box trap is probably the way to go. Cougars (I'll skip the obvious jokes) are dangerous beasts and not something you want to go hand to hand with.

Is this what he saw behind the rabbit coupe?

If so, just ask the puma how many lumps he wants in his tea. Then whack him with a large wooden mallet.

I would suggest setting landmines around the livestock pens. Not only will it get the cougar, you won't have to worry about the soviets annexing the rabbit hutches.

Thank you for your advise and your laughs. It could be a large bobcat or a lynx. We don't rightly know. We were thinking a box trap but we have no clue as to how big to construct it. No he didn't see the tail length. I already asked him and he said it was too dark. I was for shooting the 'night stalker' with buckshot from a tree stand but my friend's dad wasn't up for it. It is is a puma we want to kill it. It could pose a threat to our community.

Do you live anywhere near Lexington Street? Give Wildcat Lodge a call, and ask if any of the players are missing...

Seriously, animal control, something like that, big-ol' live-catch trap, and relocate whatever it is...

First you need to dig a large hole. Fill the hole with ashes. Line the outer rim of the hole with peas. Then when the puma comes to take a pea you kick him in the ash hole.

Hope that helps.

If you live too close to town to shoot it then you live within the jurisdiction of animal control.

Trapping a big cat is a job best left to the pros (both for your sake and the cat's).

[obscure comedy reference] So I gotta ask, are there crevasses on this property? Vicious pumas are known to hide in crevasses![/obscure comedy reference]

Check foot locker, Thats where all my friends buy theirs. I dont have the slightest idea how to catch them.

But on a more serious note, this is probably one of the funniest threads i have read in a while!

Many animal control agencies don't handle nuisance wildlife unless a rabid animal needs to be put down. They will tell you to hire a professional trapper.

First, your friend needs to know what kind of animal and how big it is before setting up a trap. I'd suggest getting a game camera and set it up by the rabbit hutches.

Second, your friend will need something to wake him up if there's something moving near the animal hutches and he needs to grab the shovel again. I'd suggest that a http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93068 placed strategically (so that free-roaming cats don't set it off) will let him know if there's something amiss.

Good luck.
