Does anyone know how to catch a puma?

could it be a large bobcat?

That was my first thought. My neighbor caught one a while back that was eating his peacocks. He caught it in a live trap. 40+ pounds - right in the middle of town pretty much.

Your Local Armed Hebrew, where do you live in Kentucky?

Bobcats are very prevalent in my area and some of them are fairly large. There are also cougar in the area, but they are few and far between.

Traping a bobcat is not particularly difficut, but traping a cougar is a different story. A live trap would have be large and very sturdy. A kill trap for cougar would be a poor idea because of the possibilty a catching/killing a child.

Three S's

Shoot - Shovel - and Shut up!

Out in CA we call them Mountain Lions and they have a reputation of picking off mountain bikers and hikers in the Los Angeles Basin!

Chances are it was a Bobcat or Lynx (16-30 Lbs.); A Mountain lion would have probably eaten the shovel that your friend hit it with! (75-160 Lbs of pure muscle)

Happy Hunting!

I think we will just make several traps of various sizes and if we don't catch it, I just sit up a few nights a shoot it.

We live about 35 miles southeast of Louisville. Kinda why we are debating weather or not it is a mt lion.

Just in case it is a mt lion, will buck shot work? Or should I use my M1 Garand?

We had an animal control service in my small town of Taylorsville Ky, but he was 90+ years old and died. I don't rightly know if he has ben replaced yet.

Another vote fore checking all the legalities of whatever sort.

Mountain lions aren't all that hard to kill. A shotgun with buckshot oughta work just fine. Given how easy it is to miss a shot at night with a rifle, particularly with iron sights, I'd think that using a shotgun would, overall, be safer.

there are only two types of wild animals you can get close enough to to whack with a shovel

#1 A wild animal that has selected YOU as food and is in the process of tenderizing you

#2 an animal on the verge of death

I suspect you are dealing with a dog sized dog. Obviously, a good look at it was not acheived, and the selection of a 'puma' was determined as it made cat like sounds. That just doesn't hold up. Did you listen to puma calls to decided how catlike they sound?

Occam's razor "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best." A. There are tons of dogs B. There are VERY few pumas C. People constantly mistake all sorts of common critters for mountain lions.

Of course, feel free to prove me wrong. Neither dogs nor cougars float, if it was there, it will have left some tracks somewhere. Further, put up a motion activated camera. Get some better proof than 'dog shaped something that sounds like a cat' I don't know what that describes but it sure doesn't describe a panther or a bobcat

I tend to lean towards Akodo's opinon however, don't leave out the possibility of some dunderheads illicit "pet" having escaped or been "set free".

90 and still doing Animal Control!Must have been an amazing guy.
I have trouble running after my dog at 30 years younger.

Have ya'll considered one of those 'game catcher' automatic cameras that the deer hunters use? Maybe that would give a positive ID.

[obscure comedy reference] So I gotta ask, are there crevasses on this property? Vicious pumas are known to hide in crevasses![/obscure comedy reference]

<snort> A puma in da crevasse!!!

By the tail, if he growls let him go, einny meinny minny moe! :D

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

If it is a mountain lion, I don't think you want to go about catchin him. Killin would be in order.

Same as a Polar Bear.

Cut a hole in the ice of a frozen stream or lake.

Place a row of canned or frozen peas around the hole.

When he stops to take a pea, kick him in the ice hole.
