Even with Ike, you gotta love Texas

Still kickin'
My mother-in law showed up yesterday AM...:uhoh:
Weathered the storm in 5th floor apt directly on the seawall west of 61st St.
Shaken but not stirred...
We had not heard from her since a day or two before Ike.
Wife pretty pissed at her.
Offered us some of her granola bars and warm apple juice that she scrounged somewhere...
Made her a steak, potato, coffee, and martini...
Cheered her up considerably.:D

Guns dry, yard being cleared of debris slowly but surely...
Still waiting for power...
Weather very cooperative...

Worked on a neighbor's fence yesterday, gotta keep the cows in...
All four guys OC'ing...
No trouble from the local constabulary for that...
Good country folks all around.
Hope all is improving for my fellow victims...
Disheartening to see how many people are dependent on the .gov...

Where's my FEMA check???:banghead:

I'm logged on via myTreo for now. Power is still out, but cool weather makes it liveable. The tre guys come tomorrow to extract the tree from the house and tarp the roof. Hopefully will see the roof guy late this week too. A&S has left for his elk hunt. That isn't the sort of thing you can reschedule due to bad weather, lol!

The mess inside the house is now almost entirely cleaned up. I still have some sweeping and mopping work in the ruined bedroom. We removed EVERYTHING wet except the walls themselves, bleached the floor to kill germs and have all windows open. Apart from a faint mustiness it's fine. But it's been more work than I could have imagined.

Some things are returning to normal. Our local dry cleaners is open, as is Kroger down the street. Kids are still out of school and many adults still off work. Makes for a pretty cheerful neighborhood despite the limits of gas and ice and power.

I am being VERY careful with my gas. And once again thankful for my 33-mpg Honda Civic!!!!

Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers. And I'm thrilled to hear so many got through ok. DEFINITELY we need an after-Ike THR get together when it's all done!

*gigglesnort*

$1.37, huh? Such largesse and you didn't invest it????

I will be perfectly happy if FEMA never discovers my existence. I am minded of the old line from Ronald Reagan aout the most terrifying words in the English language... "I'm from the government and I'm here to help...."

Then there's the folks on High Island and Bolivar Peninsula who are being threatened with MARTIAL LAW to get them to leave their homes.

Anyone else hear the rumor about how the reason AT&T land lines are down due to FEMA commandeering them? I'm not sure that's even possible. But not sure it isn't, either.

Springmom, Sounds like y'all are having some nice weather there. Thats a good thing. Yes,thank God for cars with great gas mileage.

FEMA I think they are a big joke. After Katrina hit I didn't think those mornons would ever show up to help anyone out. The news media got in why couldn't anyone else get in?

I just wonder where is all the news coverage about all the Democrats lined up in the FEMA hand out lines driving their cadlillacs, Escalades and other high dollar vehicles? And please note.... I saw these in the the FEMA line that was across the street from TWO OPEN GROCERY STORES! (with a third open grocery store only two blocks away) You just can't convince me that people who drive cars like those can't afford to buy their own food and need the government and my tax dollars to support them.

Power went out Friday night before 8pm here.

Phone company came out this morning and got the phone going, power came back up a couple hours ago.

Lost some shingles on the house, lost some walls on the shed, could have been worse, but the trees fell in the other direction.

Let the riots begin!

I heard on the radio tonight that FEMA is not going to hand out the $2000 'expedited assistance' checks like they did in 2005. According to the rep "That program no longer exists."

meh...

We don't riot down here. Yell... bluster... whinge... Yes. Riot? Not so much. I think it's too hot to work up to a good riot.

Still no power. At my sister's house (who has power) to get some work done. My employer can't seem to see why any of us haven't been working at 100% already. Guess it's hard to get a full picture of the power outages and lack of gas from your vantage point in the Caribbean. Poor souls, I think they had to put down their drinks to check on things up here.

Latest CenterPoint estimate for power in my area is "Sometime AFTER the 22nd." Joy. Comcast will be LONG after that.

Haven't had to use any weapons, but have been MIGHTY glad they are on me. A small amount of people have been stupid enough to loot, but they've been dealt with by the fuzz. Some of the Talking Haircuts have even commented that it might not be a good idea for people to loot given that this is Texas and it may not end well for the looters. Sometimes even the media has an epiphany.

Well... have to go back to work. The owners’ drinks won't buy themselves. Have to put more $$$ in the bank for them.

Night.

I tell ya - what steams my clams is the number of people calling inand B&M about how they don't have power (I'll give them credit if they are fussing about not having water to flush the john. That stinks...literally!) and demand to know why, 7 days after IKE's arrival, they still don't have electric.

Tough cookies.

This was a monster storm, and it did major damage to the 4th largest US city. It's more than a couple breakers here and a switch there. It's MILES & MILES of wire, piles of poles, and unknown mounds of transformers that have to be replaced/repaired/reinstalled.

I wish the people calling in to the radio stations would be hauled down to Reliant and other staging areas and watch these guys leave at oh-dark-thirty and come dragging their hindquarters back 18 hours later, exhausted, hot, dirty, and stinky...oh, yeah!...to camp out in tents without power just like us. These guys are from all over the country and Canada (thanks, Canuks!), having left home and family, to come rescue us. And people dare fuss because they don't have a refrigerator, A/C, or a hot shower?

If anyone wants to find sympathy from me (except for the aformentioned water for flushing), I'll tell you where to find it...PM me for specific directions

Gotta run...have ranted enough...

the fiancee and I were blessed with electricity by Tuesday. Plus the company I work for cut us loose early the Thursday before and said to go take care of your loved ones.

Took the time to go wrangle a generator for my mom up in Coldspring that Friday. Best money (other than for a gun and engagement ring) I have ever spent. :)

As it stands today, she still has no power (SHECO where are you?!?!?) but I take her ice and fuel about every other day. The generator sips gas thank God, though.

I have to admit that FEMA hasn't messed up too bad yet. Of course, its still early in the game.

As for looters...well...for some reason they didn't have anything to do with our little neck of the woods...guess they can be guilty of thinking sometimes.

TL;DR most of the other posts so I hope all the other Texicans made out okay.

Springmom, you still ain't got power yet? Off Louetta or near Old Town Spring?

Edit to add: crap...sorry about your house. :(
As for the THR get together, I am all for it. Just make the date. :)

I tell ya - what steams my clams...

I hear ya’.

The day after the storm, some great ninny called in to a radio station and was complaining that see needed to have her power on NOW cause she worked with special needs kids at school and she needed to take a shower so she could go to work. *blink blink* Well… not exactly a first responder dear… DEAL!

We had another complaining how a little old cat 2 hurricane took out the 4th largest city’s power. Someone must be to blame for this. *blink blink*. To add insult to his stupidity, he said that solar power would have fixed all this. *blink blink* If thick wooden poles and high strength wires weren’t gonna take 100 mph winds… was your little solar panel gonna save you? GAH! People!

It's very funny. Frankly, I'm really amazed at the sheer amount of stuff that IS working right now. It hasn't been a week and I swear the number of gas stations and grocery stores that are open are pretty amazing.

I love how the times I've had the misfortune to see the national news, they are trying to paint a picture of total disaster and devastation the likes of which man has never seen before.

I know people who were back to work on Tuesday to non essential jobs. By Wednesday, cars were all over the place and people were actually treating intersections as 4 way stops. It's Friday... even my dad, in one of the badly hit areas, has found gas.

While the final touches are going to be weeks (maybe months) away, I severely doubt you will see much that resembles chaos past next week. And that will be only if you look.

Now I'm not talking about the places that REALLY DID GET WIPED OFF THE MAP. My heart goes out to those who lost everything. But in Houston, we got off very easy.

It’s hot.. so what. It’s Houston. Strip down to your skivvies, chill down a beer in some FEMA ice (or go buy some at Sam’s) and have a nice weekend. Could be worse. You could be poking through week old sludge to recover bodies. You could be unable to find your loved ones.

If all you can get exorcised about is that you don’t have power after a Cat 2 ripped up all the power infrastructure, well… Plan ahead net time and have a generator and gas on hand. If you have no place for a generator, like me, well… See above. *pop* *Fizz* AAAAHHHHHH!

Surviving Ike

Hey Springmom...I feel your pain. Here in Cypress I lost my chimney (and I was worried about the Dish coming off...) and have a nice gaping hole and wet carpet to deal with. Luckily I was able to pull most of the wet stuff before the mildew-y smell kicked in. Tarped the hole (just went back and shingled over that just in case), propped up the back fence and have a decent sized pile of wet, stinky trash waiting to be picked up. Have a claim number, but still waiting for an adjuster to call. Power came on Tuesday, just in time for me to catch The Shield (not only did the Dish survive, but the signal's good!).

To keep this gun related, had .38 in the car, .380 by the bed and 9mm with me.

Hanging out in Cypress with 3 bored corgi's

Sorry to those who lost property, etc. God speed as everything crawls back to normal.

It is so refreshing to come hear THR accounts of preparing for and going through Ike. Always a relief to see that there are plenty of people in this country ready and willing to take care of themselves, unlike the lazy freeloaders you see on the news. I know there are plenty of people that legitimately need help, but I am guessing they are the minority.

It amazes me how quickly the morons that didn't leave town lined up and demanded to be fed and watered.

You must the talking about all the people who stayed on Galvaston island dispite being told "to stay would mean certain death, noone will come to your rescue, they are all leaving." Darwin will have his way. But I do feel sorry for people who cant help but to be so stupid.

Whew!!!! I got the power back about 5 this evening. The washer and dryer are going, the A/C is on (just in time as tomorrow is supposed to be pretty warm).

Unfortunately, I'm still doing Intenet on the Treo. We had to yank every cable, power cord, HD cable, ethernet cable, out and get the electronics out of water's way so fas that I now have no earthly idea how to reassemble them!

In truth, the Big Football-Showing, Sports-Viewing HD flatscreen is too big for the guest bedroom in which it currently is in exile. It cannot go back into the living room because of all the demolitiopn and repair yet to do. I may go buy a smaller bedroom-size TV and set it up. Of course it would still be nice if I knew HOW....

Hopefully AT&T will be able to provide a how-to guide. Meanwhile I'm still thumb typing.

Sorry to hear about the damage to your home, but it is good to know that you're safe and the AC is back on.

We rode out the storm up here in Conroe, and got power restored Thursday night/Friday morning around midnight. Our neighborhood looks like a war zone, but it is amazing how fast things are becoming normal, given the amount of damage.

You do have to love Texas... a law enforcement friend of mine stopped by to check on us late Saturday after the storm passed through. He wanted to make sure I had ammo.

Still no power here, but If the generator holds out, still got fuel for six or seven days.

If you are going to buy a generator, pay close attention to its scheduled maintainence requirements and "special tool" needs. Access to change oil and filters on mine is piss poor!

Talking to the neighbors about guns and readiness last night, it seems our little corner of Houston could arm a respectable Banana Republic :)

section of Willis where my mom lives is still without power. And it ain't a big deal for me to keep an eye on her. Just got her some groceries and a Starbucks so she didn't have to get out of the house. At least the SHECO electric trucks are out doing their thing. With the past few big storms to come through I have learned one thing for sure...I HATE CHINESE TALLOW TREES! These trees should be forbidden in places where the chance of winds in excess of 20 mph might occur. :cuss:

However I am glad that Springmom got her electricity back on. :)
