Let me first say that since I began to carry I usually just mind my own business, this time I didnt though.
I went to quiznos today for lunch and there was only one lady working and there was a pretty good size line building after I walked in. From back to front: young (mid 20s) couple, acting all lovey dovey, in front of them was an elderly couple helping one another decipher the menu, myself wondering if I left the sprinklers set to come on this afternoon, then at the front of the line and immediately in front of myself was these two guys, about my age (30ish) giving the woman a hard time.
"Please sir bare with me, I am all alone here, everyone else called in sick today." They kept changing there order mid way through, adding sandwiches, canceling sandwiches...
They she sent their sandwiches through the oven/toaster and moved on to myself. As I ordered I glanced over and noticed that both guys were downing a double chocolate cookie from in front of the register.
No big deal, I have done this while waiting and I always tell the cashier that I had done so in order for her to add it to my total. When I look over again I notice one guy throwing the wrappers away as the other rips into another cookie. This time Chocolate chip.
Still no big deal, maybe they were going to pay for them. So I step over to the register as she begins to work on the order for the older couple I grabbed a large cup for the fountain drink at the register and go fill it up. As I do this I say to the girl working, do you mind if I go ahead and grab my drink. "yes, go ahead, i'll be just a minute"
She then grabs the 3 sandwiches off the end of the toaster and asks the guys if they want anything else on them. Of course more drama as the main guy adds everything in the tray to his sandwich.
As she begins to ring up the two sandwiches the guy starts to say something.
"Also...." I think, of course he is going to add the 3 cookies they just ate. He continues... "Also, let me get some broccoli and cheese soup." She gets it and looks at him and says "anything else?, any drinks "he replies "nah, that's it"
I let it go a little longer and wait until he is actually starting to walk away...
"Hey buddy" I say, he and his partner turn around and he says "yeah?"
"are you seriously going to give this lady a hard time and then steal from her?"
he says "wha?"
Me "What do you think is going to happen when she tells her boss that someone ate cookies and didnt pay for them?"
he says "I was going to pay for them bro"
me "really? when?"
As he walks back to the register pulling his money back out he says to me..
"why dont you mind your own business, people like you get beat up (yes he said beat up) where I am from"
I just laughed a little and said "ok, I apologize, I should have just let this lady get ripped off, it was just a couple of cookies right?"
"I was going to pay for them, I wasnt going to steal them, dont you see this cross around my neck, dont even go there." He says while shaking his head.
I told him, "that's cool man, I only judge people by their actions."
Then he tells me again as if I didnt hear it the first time "what are you teachers pet? people like you get beat up where I am from"
I assumed by that comment that this guy was not from around here.
So I told him "I was only asking you to pay for what you took, I do not want any trouble, No one needs to get shot over a couple of cookies" (questionable and borderline bad form I know but I'm just being honsest, good or bad, this is what I said.)
He looked at me and said, "who said anything about getting shot?"
I didnt say anything.
The lady asked him how many cookies they ate, he said 2, I told her, that they had taken 3.
He looked at me and said " you dont learn do you"
I told him to just pay for his cookies and leave. He did but him and his pal stood outside standing by my bronco, they must have known it was mine because I pulled up right as they were going in.
As I paid for my lunch I said to the lady not to forget my soda, she laughed and said dont worry about it, it's on me this time.
I walked out and asked them "is this really worth it."
The main guy still doing all the talking told me "You needed to mind my own business."
I told him to have a nice day. I got it the bronco. and left them both standing there.
Yes I was armed. So I guess I should have just minded my own business but these guys cant just go around stealing stuff from business owners and no one call them out on it, right?
I always thought, hey I carry a gun now, I need to avoid confrontation. I still believe that but I also think that there are situations that call for a nice balance.
