Skip to the bold if you dont feel like reading the whole thing.

Let me first say that since I began to carry I usually just mind my own business, this time I didnt though.

I went to quiznos today for lunch and there was only one lady working and there was a pretty good size line building after I walked in. From back to front: young (mid 20s) couple, acting all lovey dovey, in front of them was an elderly couple helping one another decipher the menu, myself wondering if I left the sprinklers set to come on this afternoon, then at the front of the line and immediately in front of myself was these two guys, about my age (30ish) giving the woman a hard time.

"Please sir bare with me, I am all alone here, everyone else called in sick today." They kept changing there order mid way through, adding sandwiches, canceling sandwiches...

They she sent their sandwiches through the oven/toaster and moved on to myself. As I ordered I glanced over and noticed that both guys were downing a double chocolate cookie from in front of the register.

No big deal, I have done this while waiting and I always tell the cashier that I had done so in order for her to add it to my total. When I look over again I notice one guy throwing the wrappers away as the other rips into another cookie. This time Chocolate chip.

Still no big deal, maybe they were going to pay for them. So I step over to the register as she begins to work on the order for the older couple I grabbed a large cup for the fountain drink at the register and go fill it up. As I do this I say to the girl working, do you mind if I go ahead and grab my drink. "yes, go ahead, i'll be just a minute"

She then grabs the 3 sandwiches off the end of the toaster and asks the guys if they want anything else on them. Of course more drama as the main guy adds everything in the tray to his sandwich.

As she begins to ring up the two sandwiches the guy starts to say something.

"Also...." I think, of course he is going to add the 3 cookies they just ate. He continues... "Also, let me get some broccoli and cheese soup." She gets it and looks at him and says "anything else?, any drinks "he replies "nah, that's it"

I let it go a little longer and wait until he is actually starting to walk away...

"Hey buddy" I say, he and his partner turn around and he says "yeah?"

"are you seriously going to give this lady a hard time and then steal from her?"

he says "wha?"

Me "What do you think is going to happen when she tells her boss that someone ate cookies and didnt pay for them?"

he says "I was going to pay for them bro"

me "really? when?"

As he walks back to the register pulling his money back out he says to me..

"why dont you mind your own business, people like you get beat up (yes he said beat up) where I am from"

I just laughed a little and said "ok, I apologize, I should have just let this lady get ripped off, it was just a couple of cookies right?"

"I was going to pay for them, I wasnt going to steal them, dont you see this cross around my neck, dont even go there." He says while shaking his head.

I told him, "that's cool man, I only judge people by their actions."

Then he tells me again as if I didnt hear it the first time "what are you teachers pet? people like you get beat up where I am from"

I assumed by that comment that this guy was not from around here.

So I told him "I was only asking you to pay for what you took, I do not want any trouble, No one needs to get shot over a couple of cookies" (questionable and borderline bad form I know but I'm just being honsest, good or bad, this is what I said.)

He looked at me and said, "who said anything about getting shot?"

I didnt say anything.

The lady asked him how many cookies they ate, he said 2, I told her, that they had taken 3.

He looked at me and said " you dont learn do you"

I told him to just pay for his cookies and leave. He did but him and his pal stood outside standing by my bronco, they must have known it was mine because I pulled up right as they were going in.

As I paid for my lunch I said to the lady not to forget my soda, she laughed and said dont worry about it, it's on me this time.

I walked out and asked them "is this really worth it."

The main guy still doing all the talking told me "You needed to mind my own business."

I told him to have a nice day. :) I got it the bronco. and left them both standing there.

Yes I was armed. So I guess I should have just minded my own business but these guys cant just go around stealing stuff from business owners and no one call them out on it, right?

I always thought, hey I carry a gun now, I need to avoid confrontation. I still believe that but I also think that there are situations that call for a nice balance.

Glade to hear you came out the hero. I wonder where the punk came from. He needs to move back.

Honestly I thought you taking the high road. Was that you were hoping the chicken was really chicken and not questioning your order. :D

Heh, sounds like a western...in modern times! Good for you though; should've asked the cross wearer if "beating up" people over stolen cookies was a common Christian practice. Vedy nice.

Good on you. I wouldnt have tip my cards with the "get shot over" comment. They could have easily called in your description, your vehicle description and licesnce plate number to 911 and told them you threaten them with a gun...which, debatably, you did. That can make for a long evening with the local sheriff.

You are right, but at the time It just kind of came out, I tried to not make it obvious. I dont even think they picked up on it.

I wonder if when you mentioned about getting "shot" might've been a little nono kinda like brandishing. Otherwise thumbs up from me !

Those guys are the punks that get beat up where I'm from !

It's a shame that this should even be a concern. Shows the condition of our society when a guy does the right thing, and this comment would even raise an eyebrow.

Walking on eggshells sucks, but I guess that's how things are these days.

i would've been more like "really? where i come from, thieves go to jail, and people who catch thieves are considered helpful."

Yes on my way to the office I was driving the bronco going over things I should have could have said better or different.

I'm not going to fault you for doing the right thing. You stood up for someone. Just be aware that things like that may, in the future, end up with you drawing down on someone. Is it worth it? Remember that the thieves, while scumbags, are people too. I'm going to say you did the right thing, but it's not something I would have done.

Maybe it's cowardly, but I don't want to waste two people over a trifling confrontation about 1.50USD worth of cookies, however wrong they may be.

Huh?

What I mean is he asked it as if I heard him wrong. As if he assumed I thought he said it. I am fairly certain me being armed never crossed their mind.

Well I think you did good. The criminal might not have gotten subtle hints.

On the bright side I think your going to get great sandwichs for a while. Maybe even real chicken!!!:D

I know. No it would definitively not be worth it. It did cross my mind but for some reason I just couldnt let it go. As a general rule I keep to myself.

In this situation I pretty much sized these two up for being total pushovers. Little things like, when he talked to me he looked at the ground and wouldnt looking me in the eyes.

He bacame very slumped over in his stance and his buddy just kind of kept his mouth shut and looked at the ground.

I could have very well been wrong though. You just never know with people, especially when they get put on the spot.

He verbally threatened you with the comment about getting beat up for "not minding their own business" so you could have jumpped in the bronco and rung up 911 and they would have responded. BUT I think it turned out well. Especially if the numbnutz big talker thief started to think about what you meant about it wasn't worth getting shot over.

When you carry, you realize how many other around very well may be armed. You quickly realize that all the confrontations you have ever been in could have been far worse.

Unfortunately guys like this have never had that thought cross their minds.

another thing to consider in a situation where you want to call someone out for something without making a scene is to give them a chance to play it off as an accident, ie saying something like "excuse me friend, i'm sure this was an accident, but you seem to have forgotten to mention the cookies you ate." then he could've just been like "oops sorry". same effect, but you avoid directly calling him a thief.

based on the guy's reaction, it's clear that this was no accident, but you may as well give people the benefit of the doubt. i know it's stupid but i can think of an occasion or two when i've genuinely forgotten to pay for things. i once got lunch and then walked out of the entrance to my company cafeteria without having gone through the registers, because i ran into someone and got caught up in a conversation. made it all the way to the elevators before the little light bulb went off...

I'm going to have to be the spoil-sport and point out your glaring mistake.

You told us both kinds of cookies they ate, and which soup was ordered, and then kept us in the dark about their final choices in sandwich.

Sorry to bring it up, but it needed to be done.
