I just found out about these rifles, and I think I'm in love. I love my Mosin, and this rifle just kicked it up several notches. The price however is not something I'm in love with, at least the ones that I can find on gunbroker. I'll ask around local shops and check gun shows, but I wonder why no US firm is importing them. I found a Canadian firm that is importing them and selling them at a nice price

Does anyone know of anyway to get one of these from Canada into the US? I have a friend who is a dual citizen (Canada and US), he can legally purchase one of these in Canada, and I don't see any reason he couldnt possess it in the U.S. I'm just wondering if it is possible for him to cross the border with it, and then ideally sell it to me. Anyone know if this is feasible? I would really like one of these rifles and would hate to pay an extra 300-500 bucks for one.

Unfortunately no, they can't be imported. Sure wish they could. I'd be all over one for $429 that's for sure.

Gun laws are stupid.

I wouldn't suggest trying to smuggle a rifle into the country. For all the cheap SVTs Canada has, we have more than 5 rd mags and so on. I would just keep my eyes open for a $600-700 SVT in the US. The problem with buying on sight unseen(unless the selle is honest) is that SVTs are notorious for haveing problems with the gas system. Firing corrosive ammo takes its toll on the gas valve, piston and cup.

There used to be a gun shop in Montana that would import firearms from Canada, but it was expensive with many forms to fill out, and the wait for approval could run to years. If you want I could see if I still have their name and address somewhere. I got my SVT here in the states for $175.00 about ten years ago. It's a great weapon and one of my prize possesions.:D I agree about checking one over good before you buy. Many SVTs look great on the outside, but the inside is corrosion city.:(

I would disagree. Many of the SVT-40's you see, but not all, were refurbished in Russia before importation, and thus unless abused since, are in fine shape. I was lucky, I found mine at just over $700, right before the prices went a bit crazy. There are enough on Gunbroker for sale, that you can get one at a fairly reasonable price, just look often and have ythe cash and transfer ready to go.

As for corrosion, be diligent and propt to clean, but don't allow excessive worries to scare you. The gas system is quite easy to disassemble and clean, as opposed to the bolt, which can be a pain. The gas system is basicaly a piston system, but the gas system is very short, and the piston is cupped and easy to remove. Get a decent gas adjuster, and move the adjuster periodically so it stays free.

There's a guy making new stainless gas cups, tubes, and valves for SVT-40s.

And Romak's right, they're easy to clean and very simple.

I should have bought one a couple years ago when nice specimens could be had for $500.00 or less. Now I'm kicking myself. :cuss:

I remember when they were $199 apiece. I was afraid becuz I had been told that they blew up unpredictably. Should have bought 5.

Beg to differ. The Gas System can be a royal pain in the ass to break down.

Dr. Peter (and others), try to find yourself a gas adjustment tool. I have a copy of the original Russian model. The repro was produced by Black River? IIRC. I found out about it on surplusrifles.com, and ordered it over the internet. Cost is around $15 shipped. The tool has the wrenches built in for all the parts to disassemble the gas system. I can have mine taken down in a minute or so. It was a BIG help.
