I recently scored a very nice old Redfield spotting scope off fleabay and wanted a way to protect it from being all scratched and damaged from being carried around in my shooting range box. After a little thought, I was inspired to make this carrying pouch out of an el Cheapo nylon/cordura (?)padded rifle case, I think I paid a buck for it at a yard sale somewhere.

I simply cut off the small end and got my Lovely Bride to sew it up. Works great, well padded, zips up, just right for the job. If you decide you want to do this, be SURE the guncase is UNZIPPED all the way before you cut it so you still have the zipper function. Cut the case about 3-4 inches longer that the spotting scope.

looking good. with a little more sewing perhaps you could have a pouch inside for the tripod? care to tell how you came by the UNZIPPED knowledge?:scrutiny:;)

It was a very close thing, Claude, I almost screwed up, caught it in the nick of time.:scrutiny:

I use a full size camera tripod so I can place the scope on the ground next to me instead of on the shooting bench, so no room in the gun case for something that large. The tripod is pretty rugged so I dont worry too much about it.

good system jnyork, perhaps after my fingers heal from my recent sewing project, and as i have some rifle cases that are handleless, i shall attempt your idea for my daughter.....perhaps add a adjustable shoulder length strap to it thus making it harder for her to drop. a pouch if i am feeling ambitious or stuffing the tripod in a thick cotton sock would also work. thank you.

Being a bachelor, I bought a sewing machine a long time ago. It sure beats using the "Bachelor's Sewing Machine," i.e., a stapler.

I make my own gun cases out of some heavy canvas --I bought ten yards of it.

Here's a small example, one for a small auto with a mag pouch.

Closure is with a long shoelace sewn into the top edge --barely seen in photo. My cases are only meant to keep dust and dings off my guns, not to protect them from a tank running over them.

I hate to tell you guys this, but there's a heck of a lot of real engineering that goes into a "from scratch" sewing project. The gals will confirm this, I'm sure, but they won't necessarily use the term "engineering."
