I will have to submit my choices for my clinical year for my DVM degree in a couple months. my choices are limited to these 5 state schools. While obviously firearm criteria will be low on the list I'm looking forward to being back in the states. I was wondering what the rules were on getting out of state ccw, lots of public ranges, etc. also since I can look that stuff up. I want actually how hard/realistic-general attitudes on firearms.
Ex I'm from NJ originally and technically they are shall issue but you'd never actually get one.

Also I assume it would be cool for me to keep a weapon in my house, how about my car? the schools would be ISU, LSU, Purdue, OSU, and Auburn any info is appreciatted

I went to Purdue a couple years ago, even with a concealed carry permit you are not allowed to carry on campus by the regs. You should make sure that firearms are allowed if you choose to live in an apartment complex. I would assume keeping one in your car would also be frowned upon. There is a good gun shop/indoor range called flat creek as well as really good deals at the Sportsman's warehouse. There is also a good public range about an hour and a half away called Pulaski. As to general gun attitudes I would say it was mostly positive to indifferent. Purdue was fun but the ratio of guys to girls is like 3 guys to every girl if that makes any difference to you. If you do end up going check out The Neon Cactus on thursday nights its a blast.

Me and my Purdue buddies at the range as you can see a very pro gun group of boilermakers.

Purdue,without a doubt.
Hoosiers rock!:D
Seriously ,overall living in Indiana, with its great people, great topography and overall wonderful attitude would be my choice. No disrepectful to the other fine states intended.

Alabama has a very open CCW. Fill out the form, 3 character references signature,a background check , $7.50 and you usually recieve it in less than 30 days.
Im sure Auburn has about the same policy as others about not carrying on campus, but I could be wrong....
Plenty of woods around Auburn for hunting and fishing. If you google auburn firing range, or gun range there are several that pop up. :)

Rmart is that out of state ccw?

To all I know I can't carry on campus, but since i'll have rotations at all hours i was wondering if i could keep one in my car(obvisouly parking off campus)

Auburn doesn't allow guns to be carried on campus. It is a fine school and is a great place to live. There are more than a few places to go shoot. No shortage of sporting goods stores, either. Most apartment complexes allow guns in your apartment as long as it is not on display. (Keep it hidden) The faculty at Auburn is extremely nice and helpful and seem to want to help you succeed. That was a major selling point for me. Night life it there, but could use some work :)

IL does not allow concealed carry yet, and until Chicago is a separate state it probably won't. As for hunting there is alot of public ground down here in the Southern tip of the state (SIU Carbondale) and it wouldn't be hard to be a SIU student and still live close to decent public hunting ground.

Rmart is that out of state ccw?

Im not sure how long you have to be here to be considered a "resident". I guess if you have a address here and have you DL changed (which you are supposed to do) to a AL D/L i would imagine you can file for CCW as a resident.
I dang sure wouldnt tell them im only going to be here a year or so....

Alabama honors the following states CCW permits....... AK,CO,FL,GA,ID,IN,KY,LA,MI,MS,MO,NH,NC,ND,OK,SD,TN,TX,UT,WY......

That info is from www.ccrkba.org....

Have you explored Kansas State University's Veterinary program? K-State's a great school, Manhattan has plenty of shooting/hunting in the area and we've got both CCW and NFA here now.

The cost of living's not too bad, either.

OK is a shall issue ccw state and you are eligible as soon as you have an Oklahoma driver's license........the "Brady Bunch" gives us an F rating for firearms regulations...

No guns on campus in Oklahoma without permission of the president. The OSU president led the charge against the bill that would have allowed it. However, Oklahoma in general is good on firearms.

We recognize any CCW (get a Utah or Florida out of state and you're good to go here, though if you plan to become a legal resident you should get Oklahoma's permit.) Full autos and silencers are legal. House - no problem with or without permit. Unloaded handguns and rifles are OK in the car without a permit. With a permit you can carry a loaded handgun and a long gun magazine loaded and unchambered.

We do have a weird knife law which does not limit blade length or such but does forbid knives with a button on the handle that releases the blades - they intended to outlaw switchblades but may have gone further.

Our climate is more moderate than Illinois or Indiana. There are some public ranges, both outdoor and indoor. I don't know Stillwater that well. I know there is a Stillwater Rifle and Pistol Club (http://srpc.info/about/about.shtml). It's not that far to the very nice ranges around Oklahoma City.

Rural land is cheap here and lots of folks just buy a few acres and shoot there.

Indiana is gun and doctor friendly. I live in Indiana and my sister is OB/GYN. We have the superbowl colts, pacers, Indianapolis 500, brickyard 500.... It's not a bad place to live.

Purdue is a great school but it's engineering so the male to female ratio isn't the greatest. Or at least it wasn't 7 years ago. It may have changed since I was there last though. Just something to consider....

Illinois is almost as anti-gun as the nation of Cuba or the Peoples' Republiks of N. Korea, Great Britain, California, New York or Taxachusetts. I'd go with either Indiana or Alabama.

My friend Rmart30 is only partially correct~! :uhoh:

With all due respect, some Alabama counties are higher
than the $7.5 @ year that he posted. For example, my neighboring
county of Tuscaloosa is $20.00 a year; whereas we folks in good
old Jefferson County (Birmingham metro area) only pay $7.50@ year.
One requirement here in JeffCo is that a person must establish
residence for 6 months, prior to applying for his/her CCW license.

Indiana honors all state CCW licenses.

Layfette is about an hour from Indianapolis, and about two hours from Chicago.

Baton Rouge is a Class III town. If you're looking to go NFA, then Baton Rouge is the place to go. If you go to LSU and are looking to get into IPSC, there are matches every weekend all within a hour drive and some closer. Also Palo Alto is not too far either and if you like CMP leg matches, they have them too. There are couple of indoor ranges in Baton Rouge. Precision Firearms will allow shotguns and rifles but only for members ($300 a year).

Not to mention, LSU is quite a sight and is a lot of fun.

you can get class 3 in LA. there is no permit required open carry in LA. no registration.

I don't know is LA offers an out of state permit, but for resisdents, it is a shall issue state.

While state law does not allow carry even with a CCW on school grounds, with a Parish permit you can, and those are available, but up to the sheriff, not shall issue.

I would be surprised if any of the schools allow carry on campus.

Illinois is far and away the worst of your choices from a gun laws perspective. No CCW, nohow, nowhere. You will have to get a FOID card - basically a gun owner license - to posess, transport, or purchase guns or ammo. Things would be even worse there if the Chicago area pols had their way, and they're always pushing for even worse gun laws.

I am so glad I crossed over the state line to Indiana. Whole different world here for gun owners.

jaholder1971, I'm already in vet school KSU had turned me down. I do agree with you on manhattan, I did my undergrad there and wound up buying a house there. Unfortunatley, I am limited to those 5 schools due to my grades/contracts my school has with thiers otherwise GO WILDCATS!

looks like gunwise, all seem to be pretty good except IL for LA and the other states is open carry common? will people be calling the cops on me?
