It is important that the LA Times retains the courage to publish
articles that run counter the so-called 'common sense' of the
general public. Guns and freedom are both radical concepts, and
should not be locked away in the closet of PC.

Dear Editors:
I am amazed at your provocative publication of John Lott's op-ed,
arguing that arming teachers will make schools safer. I have rarely
read anything in a newspaper that runs so head-on into ingrained
anti-firearms prejudices or that argues so cogently against the
conventional wisdom of the chattering classes that firearms are
inherently evil no matter the circumstances. Tell that to the Israelis,
where today, as has happened before, an armed civilian shot and captured
a terrorist. As a former chairman of Amnesty International, I was not
born a full fledged right winger, but I have become a convert to a more
utilitarian view of arming civilians. There are going to be times and
places when it will be advantageous, and allowing trained teachers to
protect helpless schoolchildren from the occasional crazed fellow
student or invading nut case appears to be one of them.

Dear Editor,
Kudoes to the LA Times for publishing John Lott's data-filled op-ed on
protective gun use! Every one of the 15 relevant studies (even the
studies financed by the anti-self-defense lobby) estimate 1 to 4 million
defensive gun uses annually, protecting a perfectly credible 0.5 to 2%
of our population of 1/4 billion people each year -- lives saved,
property protected, injuries prevented, and medical costs averted. In
the 35 states allowing good citizens to carry guns for protection, every
category of violent crime is lower. Crime fell after concealed handgun
laws were changed to let good people protect themselves, their families,
and their communities. Even untrained private citizens using guns have a
better safety record than the police and none of the swooning gun ban
lobby's bogeyman "blood running in the streets" stories have come true.
Guns' benefits outweigh their criminal use over a hundredfold. Stringent
gun control, disarming innocent victims, is not a policy that will save
lives, but it certainly emboldens vicious predators. We recognize that
some may choose to eschew the safest and most effective means of
protection, guns, so our physicians' organization is pro-choice on gun
ownership.
