In a Los Angeles coffin.
I'm sure they do. While I'm at it, what about 10mm also?

Lastly, what major/popular models are out there? I'd be interested in one.

Please forgive the newb question. Thank you.

S&W 610. Chambered for 10mm but can fire the .40 S&W. A very nice revolver, indeed, but I think kinda rare. I've seen exactly 2 in my time, both have a non-fluted cylinder. Pretty mean looking revolver if you ask me. And certainly a nice shooter.

There's the 610 in 10mm, and the 646 PC in .40.

I occasionally shoot with a young guy who's an ESR Master in IDPA with his 646. From what I've heard he's actually "burned out" a the titanium cylinder once or twice. Not sure what's involved there, whether it's a wear issue or something else.

There was a small run like this:

Plus a number were made as dual cylinder .38-40/.40 S&W convertibles, IIRC. Operative term here being were in both cases.

I agree. I have a 940 which is a j-frame that shoots 9mm with moon clips. I got it to accompany what I was shooting and to use "duty ammo", and I suggested that they make the same in a .40 S&W to for the same reason when my employer upped the issue guns to that caliber. I think it would be a pretty good idea, but so far no luck

Yep,

This is one of 400 Performance Center Model 646 L-frame S&W revolvers made in the fall of 2001 . . . 8-14-2001 to be exact.

And the other side . . .

They were "race guns" designed to win the revolver classes in the action type gun games. Fast loading with full moon clips and really accurate too!

Alas, it was a one production run gun. Later, S&W made an other small batch of L frame 646 revolvers using the left over titanium cylinders. These had conventional-looking S&W full lugged barrels (ala 686). About 800 of these were put together. After that, there were no more.

The new S&W 310 Night Guard in 10mm is due this spring.

The cylinder of a J frame is too small to make a 5 shot 40 cal with cylinder walls thick enough to handle the pressure of .40 S&W. Even in the 5 shot L frames in 44 caliber the cylinder wall thickness restricts the guns to being chamber in .44 Special.
