Sorry for the simple question but I'm a revolver guy, not a semi-auto guy. My son has a Springfield 1911A1 and I want to buy him a few Mags as part of a present. He is now using 7 round mags. What I want to know is will 8 round mags like those made by Wolff fit in his 1911 without modifications of any kind?

Thanks...

The Chip McCormick and Wilson 8 rounders will work without any mods. If you look at my thread today about getting a new to me 1911.....That is a 8 round Chip McCormick mag sitting flush just like the factory 7 round.

Dont know anything about Wolff.

Edit: is that the company that makes all the trigger springs that everyone likes?? If it is I would use them in my guns.

From just looking at the picture, I would say no. The base plate looks like it will protrude. All the 8 round mag's I've used look just like the 7 rounds they show below 8 rounds mags your looking at.

Like C-grunt, I have good luck with wilson and Chip McCormick, both the 8 round and 10 round mags (but the 10's extend below as well).

***I just now read the "with out modifications... that mag should work, it just wont fit flush like the other mags.***

I've had very good luck with Wilson 47Ds but the next set I buy will be Tripp Cobra Mags.

I recommend the Kimbe Kim Pro Tac mags. Very nice mags at a decent price and they don't have the plastic follower like the Wilsons do.

Ive had good luck with teh Checkmate Industries mags that came with my Valor and Tripp Research. I will be ordering more Tripps.

A little while back, I tried writing Checkmate to do a local group buy. Never heard back from 'em.

It sux to have to pay the Colt markup and Brownell's full-ride prices, but these mags are worth it. Impact carries these mags for less than Brownells, but they have no stock.

The answer is YES.

After a number of years of using more magazines than I can remember in various 1911-type pistols I find I'm down to using ACT-MAG, Cobramags and some Metalform. I still have a bunch of others in boxes which I probably ought to discard for lack of use ... including some early Devel, Vega, Pachmayr, Shooting Star, Wilson, etc. magazines.

The ACT-MAG was being used for the current Wolff magazines last I checked, and I've been using a handful of them without issue. They're also used by Novak and S&W. (Wolff offers an Extra Power spring.) Wolff used to use Metalform, BTW.

I haven't ordered any of the newer Cobramag magazines yet. I picked up some of the previous production magazines just as they were getting ready to change vendors for the magazine body. The fellow on the phone told me they were looking for a new vendor and that they anticipated their new magazines would be improved in respect to tolerances in the body dimensions. He also told me that because of the various tolerance differences in some of the 1911-style pistol frames being produced nowadays that they offered some differently dimensioned followers which would probably resolve any slide stop engagement issues I might encounter when using the 'standard' follower, should I encounter any problems. Nice fellow. Mine's acted fine with various JHP ammunition in a couple of my 1911's, and I gave one to another fellow who was having some issues with some different magazines being used in a Commander. It resolved his feeding issues and I had to make the 'loan' of the magazine to him 'permanent'. ;)

One of the first things I did when I bought my XSE Government was remove the short-legged folded leaf follower and short spring used in the Colt magazine and replace them with a Metalform standard dimpled follower and heavy spring. I like using 7 rounds in a magazine body originally designed to hold 7 rounds and feed them reliably. I like using magazines with slightly longer bodies when it comes to holding 8 rounds ... but that's just me.

Colt, Chip McCormick Shooting Star and Power Mag, Checkmate, Kimber Pro Tac, Wilson, ACT/Novak, in no particular order.

Walkalong,

I just recieved a couple new Checkmates, SS, 8 round, with the "patented hybrid" follower. . . . . . I am extremely impressed with the overall quality, and bench testing, they feed very well. I might add I find fault with just about everything and I'm picky, picky, picky.

I plan on range testing them in the next few months, using them exclusively.

Did you get the welded base model? I would like to use flush 8rd mags, but honestly I just don't trust them. I have factory 7rd and reputable aftermarket mags and they have never failed me.

outerlimit,

Yes, they are the welded flush base. One of the things that impresses me is the mag spring tension feels practically the same from the first round to the 8th. These are much easier to load on the last round compared to the Chhip McCormicks.
