Just picked up a crate of ammo for my new AK74 and had to share. It sure feels good to pay $145 a case again!! :D:D:D

Paid $310 for 2,160 rounds of 5.45x39 goodness!

SHTF: Are You Ready??

The answer to that question is always dependent upon two variables:
A) How much "S" is hitting the "F"
B) The proximity of the "F" to your 20.

I don't quite have enough ammo, or the ideal suppressors, but other than that, my family could survive, espically around here.

Nice setup you have there. I would get even more ammo if you can afford to because if you run out of 5.45X39 you are probably going to have a hard time finding more. Then again, if you have to fire that many rounds then there should be plenty of other weapons you could scrounge for in more abundant calibers. ;)

I feel pretty well prepared. I've got 4 SKS rifles and one AK-47 with ~7,000 rounds of 7.62X39. I also have one 5.56X45 rifle with about 2,500 rounds of various ammo. I have several 9mm pistols and one rifle with at least 3,000 rounds of FMJ in stock as well as two shotguns with over 250 rounds of buckshot. Thats not counting various other weapons in different calibers with several hundred or even thousand rounds for each, such as 8mm, 6.5X55 Swede, .45 ACP's, 7.62X25's, .357 Magnums, .45 Colts, .22 Magnums, and .22 LR's.

Of course, that is only a modest cache compare to many members here...

Yeah I've put some thought into the future availability of 5.45 but I can only assume that Wolf 5.45 will always be available. Even Wolf 5.45 is considerably cheaper then their 7.62 or .223 ammo. If they do pass some type of import ban then I think we are all screwed for 7.62 and 5.45.

I'm ready enough for me to at least get the hell out of the city. You on the other hand seem to have it down pat. Nice gun. :)

HaHa.. do you have your K-Bar and head band ready for rapid deployment too? :neener:

Yes, nice gun!

I need more guns and more ammo. Hope it don't hit for awhile.

I'm still waiting for a JDAM and delivery system before I am "ready". ATF hasn't been returning my calls.

Forty-two seconds, actually. And it was at least as good survival preparation as any of the SHTF stuff you'll see.

I'm ready for 2-3 guys trying to get into my house, or joining up with locals to form a militia for a quick and short defense. If by SHTF you mean having to single handedly defend 2 platoons of fully armed and supported highly trained soilders who spent 10 days planning the attach on my house, then no I'm not ready for SHTF.

Let me ask you this. Do you have enough water?

Somehow survival become synonymous with round count. "Katrina Rifle", "SHTF gun", all those labels make me wince when I hear them from grown men. How about food, water, making friends with your neighbors, extending yourself to people who need help in a disaster? I know it's not as cool as an M4 with with a flashlight but it is way more practical and valuable. That being said of course there is a place for a firearm for protection during a disaster but in all likely hood it won't need to be fired.

I think I will agree with posts #14 and #16. Sounds like you are happy with your gun and ammo purchase so Good Job!

What exactly is your version of SHTF

Good start lovesbeer

OK, so, back to the original poster "xjedix" so what exact SHTF scenario are you preparing for?

I'm going to steal someone else line here... but is it the one where your standing in your front yard, ankle high in brass with the bodies of the Radical Muslims, Evil Biker Gang, (insert name of evil doers here), piled up like cord wood against your fence while the girls from the local Hooters restaurant are hiding behind you and want you to father their children ?

Sorry to break your shoes man, I know you're probably just excited about your new gun and the deal you got on ammo. Hey I would be too.. it looks sweet. If the **** ever hit the fan bad enough for you to ever need the full capacity of that weapon, a.) you better not be alone, b.) you would probably never have time to reload after you emptied out you first four mags c.) you'd probably be witnessing a global meltdown which would end in Armageddon which in turn would leave apparently only you (and maybe the leader of the free world..:uhoh:)

Enjoy your guns & ammo! (hey..what a great name for a magazine:rolleyes:)

rich636, it's easier for them to buy a rifle and tactical gear and to buy into a fantasy than it is to do the legwork (reconnoitering your area) and the homework (reading old books on edible wild plants and canning), and to make the sort of friends, big or small, who you'd want to band together with in the event of a catastrophe, big or small.

Now now people, the thread title was just an attention getter. I picked the rifle up last week and the ammo today so I was excited to share a pic. With current ammo prices I was stoked to get something that's actually affordable to shoot. I hope to get out this weekend and put some rounds through her.

I did not mean to start a SHTF debate so please excuse the choice of thread title.

Doesn't look like any AK-74 I've ever seen.

You may be ready for SHTF, but are you ready for TWFT? :

43 seconds I'll never get back. oh god, I can't get the song out of my head!!!

Yes I often use the SHTF excuse to buy things. I don't buy into really needing everything I have in an emergency, but it gives me a reason to buy goofy things I don't really need.

Xjed, I like a can of 1K rounds just as much as you. Don't get me wrong. The problem is that it's hard to tell if someone is lighthearted in saying something because it's typed text with no tone. I think the phrase is overused and oversimplifies emergency preparedness. If I want to read pulpy threads I can always go read the zombie forum at Arf.com but a lot of us make THR and TFL home because they're friendly, knowledge based (as much as internet forum can be ), and have a more mature following. I don't in anyway mean to say you aren't part of that group, or judge you from one post. I just want to explain why I bristled a little bit at the word choice in the title. No hard feelings? :D
