walther p22 or sig mosquito??

I woulld have to give my vote for the Walther as I own 2 of them and they are very well built guns and will digest any ammo I have loaded in them. I try to keep my costs down on .22 LR and thus I shoot some crap ammo sometimes. One of the ranges I contract with had a Sig mosquito as a rental and I am glad they did as most were able to discover that it was a piece of S$%T without investing purchase price! One friend did however buy one thinking that because it was a "SIG" it would be awesome! I am always careful not to mention the mosquito as I dont usually have the time or patience to listen to his 1/2 hour rant about what a total junk pistol this was and how he would not wish it on his enemies! Second hand experience yet from an employee of a gunstore who learned the hard way. If I didnt love the p-22, I wouldnt own two!

You might want to run a search on this topic. It has been covered many many times, with fans of both guns weighing in to support their case and cause. You can and should start right here on The High Road, of course. You also should consider visiting Rimfire Central, where copious amounts of material have been written about both guns -- and where both have their supporters and detractors.

From my perspective, given the choice of materials used in their manufacture, you should avoid both the P22 and the Sig and get yourself a Ruger, a Browning, a Colt -- anything that is more substantially made.

I would buy neither. I have heard a lot of bad things about both. The most reliable .22 semi autos have a "split slide" design. Go with a ruger 22/45, s&w 22a, or something like that.

I don't have much experience with a P22. I do hear lots of good reviews of them.

I can't say the same for the Mosquito. A good friend of mine has one. It constantly gives him fits. I have shot it quite a bit as well. We have tried everything to get it to run. Tried swapping the recoil springs. (It comes with two different weights.) Tried lots of different ammo.


It runs decently well with CCI minimags and CCI Velocitors. Good ammo, that is expensive for plinking. I wouldn't want a 22 that wouldn't function with bulk ammo. Expensive ammo has it's place of course. But a 22 pistol ought to be useful as a plinker.

Get a Ruger Mark II if you can find one.

I owned a P22 and shot a friends Mosquito. Both are underwhelming for comfort, accuracy, and pointability.

I much prefer the S&W 422 or a good old Ruger MkII.

Another vote for neither. I would take a good clean Ruger Mark II over either one of these any day of the week.

I've owned both a Mosquito and a P22. I don't own either one anymore and never will again. They look cool and that's about all they have going for them.

If you want a decent .22 handgun then go with Ruger, Browning or Beretta.

Dude, I've heard LOTS of bad things about the P22. I have heard on this website that they are not in fact made by Walther, but by the company that owns Walther. Supposedly, there is a pistol that they make, that is a blank-firing gun, that looks exactly like the P22. I would always take a Sig product over a Walther product, however, I don't know anything about the Sig Mosquito.

I have around 620 rounds through my Ruger Mk. III without breaking it down and cleaning. That's VERY good for a .22 pistol. In my opinion, I would get a Ruger or the Sig.

My so has a P22, it is fun to shoot,
but it jams every so often, he has only been shooting winchester in it,
someone told him the real high velocity ammo like CCI will shoot with no jams, an it takes about 500 rds. to break in the P22, after that it
will shoot about anything, also it already has a threaded barrel if he whats to get a silencer for it later, I thought it was pretty accurate when I shot it.

I would agree that both the Browning and the Ruger would be better choices. I have a Buck Mark and like it very much. That being said, I just bought a Mosquito to have an additional .22 on hand for the wife or daughters to use.
I took the Skeeter to the range last week and put 100 rounds of CCi Mini-Mag through it with zero problems.
The early Mosquitos had some problems which seemed to have been worked out. The other problem is that owners were not doing what they were supposed to do. Sig says to clean the new gun before using and to keep it lubricated. They also recommend using the Mini-Mags at least for the first 400 rounds to break it in. Not everyone is doing that.
The Mosquito felt better in my hand than the P22 did. When I shot the Mosquito last week I also had the Buck Mark there for comparison. In my hands I shot the Skeeter as well as I did the Buck Mark.
So, granted I only have 100 rounds through the Skeeter, but they were trouble free and I liked it very much and it is a keeper.

I have had the SIG Mesquito for about 3 months now. I had a lot of problems with it jamming at first. Then I took the advice of SIG and started using CCI MINI-MAGS. It has not jammed one time since. I have probably put around 500 rds thru it since the switch and have had a lot of fun with it since. I have just made it a point to stock up on the MINI-MAGS.


PS... Will shoot HP or Solid Nose MINI-MAGS

I have had both, still have the SIg Skeeter. My P22 was a TOTAL POS Jama-matic. The Skeeter has been 100% reliable with everything except CCI Velocitor ammo, I even shot Aguila Supermax and it feed 100%. My skeeter shoots a ragged hole group at 50 feet with CCI SGB and like most guns has its likes and dislikes as far as accuracy with ammo. Most ammo shoots well ( under 3 inches 10 shots 50ft ) except an older box of federal hipower 22, 6 inch group. I also have the Browning Buckmark camper and it is a great 22 and pricewise I would pick it over the Sig.

The nice thing about the Skeeter is the ergonomics are like the P226 etc and its like cheap practice for the centerfire version. I have heard good reports and some bad about the Mosquito at rimfire central and many feeding problems have been tracked to a loose screw and dirty guns and dirty shooting ammo. I am happy with mine, but I do feel they are about $50.00 or so overpriced and only come with 1 magazine which is $44.00!

Something else...

My P22 is rediculously reliable. I've run hundreds of rounds through it without a single FTF or FTE. I was amazed.

That said, it's very underwhelming in the accuracy department.

I wanted a .22 similar to my carry gun - external hammer, DA/SA, safety, etc.

That said, I would buy a Browning Buckmark if I could do it all over again.

Also, DO NOT BUY A USED P22. I got lucky, but the gun is known for early models performing poorly. Many guns can be bought second-hand - I would not recommend the same for a P22.

If you must, look for a 3rd generation gun and with the 2nd or 3rd gen mags. Look around for info - has to do with info printed on the slide and mag.

The P22 is a Umarex product. Umarex is the parent company of Walther; its primary line and area of expertise is air guns. Uarex began its association with Walther in the early 1990s and has been the dirving force behind the P22. The P99 and the PPS, in comparison, are both Walther products and superior in every way.

This is not to knock the P22. Many folks love it and find it a great range companion, despite the pot-metal construction of its slide and the overall throw-away, disposable nature of the design (when it breaks, toss it ... much like a plastic Bic lighter). But it's not a Walther.

Again, try a Ruger, Browning, Colt, or a real Walther: the PP or PPK.
