I recently came across a website selling standard "dummy" grenades for about 7 bucks. They say it's just like the real thing minus the powder and ignition.

Well, on the same page the same company also sells a new spring/ignition kit for the grenade. In other words to make a real working grenade minus the powder. It cost a dollar.

You don't have to be very smart to weld over the hole in the bottom and refill with some kind of explosive you bought over the internet.

Let me point out that I am NOT going to try this, (though I do want a dummy grenade) and would have absolutely NO use for a grenade even if I had one. But it still begs the question in my head...would it be legal? Can you get some kind of tax stamp for that, or is it pretty much a direct ticket to federal prison?

Explosives are regulated separately from firearms. The provisions of the NFA don't apply. Instead go to the FELC for info. http://www.atf.gov/explarson/felc/index.htm
But basically, if you have no legitimate agricultural or industrial use you will not be approved for licensure nor user permit.
If you assemble an explosive device without license, you get a whole new room to live in. Be nice to your new roommate, he thinks you look like a woman.

Or a weapon of mass destruction. There's all sorts of legalities there. I still like those old displays with a dummy grenade: "Complaint department. Please take a number" (and the number is attached to the pin).

wouldn't the same rule that applies to tannerite apply here? You can have all the parts, just can't put them together until you're gonna use it and can't transport it after it's put together. Oh, and can't get paid for assembling or using it.

Hand grenades could be great for home defense if you value your life more than your walls. ;)

If I chose to adopt Hollywood's reality, I could think of countless tactical uses for hand grenades, one-liners not included.

From the Destructive Device laws:

"any grenade ... [or] any combination of parts either designed or intended for use in converting any device into a [grenade].

In other words, possessing a grenade shell is legal. Possessing a grenade ignition kit is legal. Possessing both = felony.

Tannerite is not a grenade or other destructive device as long as it is mixed and used according to laws regarding personal use of explosives. It is a highly stable gunpowder variant, and the same laws apply as gunpowder regarding how much mixed Tannerite you may possess (up to 50 pounds, barring local restrictions). If a person were to mix up a large stockpile of the stuff in his home, that would be an explosive cache. If a person mixes it then immediately uses it in a lawful manner, that is legal. Actually blowing stuff up with Tannerite (washing machines, old computers, etc.) may enter into a grey area, but so far the ATF has declined to prosecute people for taking out their frustrations on their own personal property.

Grenades, being self-contained, are regulated as explosive DDs under the 1934NFA and not regulated as separate "bulk" explosives requiring a magazine per the BATFE orange book, last I checked. :)

Careful! Don't post anything that the anti's will use against us! Quick! Act like you're talking about benchrest rimfire competitions or something! Yeah that's the ticket!

several years ago I was reading up on some Civil War history and found a description of a grenade was made then and was amazed at how easy it would be to make one. Of course I would not make one but the pic says it all, so simply. The ingenuity of people then was amazing.

Grenades deactivated with the spring ignition have been sold through different venues for many years. Deactivated it is nothing more than a hunk of iron.......The recommendation is of course, do not try to make it active. You are breaking the law and ""Will put your eye out"".:)
