I was in a gun store today looking for scope rings and I stopped by their gun counter. They had a surplus CZ82 in typical used finish for $159. I thought, "jeez that's too good to be true," so I asked to see it.

Now I don't know what kind of barrels these pistols have, but I've seen the bores on Makarov PMs and there is easily visible rifling. Honestly, it looked like a smoothbore. Both myself and another guy tried to feel even miniscule rifling with a ball point pen but as far as we could tell, somebody ground the inside of this thing to a mirror.

Can anyone get a picture of the rifling on their CZ82 so I can compare, and does anyone know if there's a history of these pistols having this "feature."

That was a good deal.

The CZ82's barrel has polygonal rifling. It's supposed to look smooth. It's a different type of rifling compared to conventional rifling. Some benefits to polygonal rifling are: maybe a slightly higher velocity, but ultimately longer barrel life.

My Glock has polygonal rifling, right? The two looked very different. I'm telling you, this thing didn't have ANY rifling visible.

I've seriously got to see the bore on one that someone knows is in good shape.

Polygonal rifling is actually a very general description of this type of rifling. Truth is there are different types of Polygonal rifling. Different manufacturers use different profiles of polygonal rifling.

I've got one, that is exactly how the rifling looks. It is very accurate. Maybe CZ does their polygonal rifling somewhat differently than Glock. You passed up what was probably a great deal. Maybe you could go back and talk them down based on the lack of rifling in the barrel?:)

I need another gun like I need another hole in my head. It'd just be something I didn't have time to shoot on a regular basis, unfortunately. But I'll buy that the rifling just looks, well, weird.

yeah, they're very smooth looking. don't let it freak you out. if anything, post the store name and we'll take it if you don't. :D

Beware of what? It's been explained that all CZ82's rifling looks like you describe. Its normal...did you take it out and shoot it?

Cz82

I have several of these little pistols and even though they all look like smoothe bores, they are some of the most accurate pistols that I own. Polyagonal rifling works and works quite well. Mine have shot Silver Bear JHP & FMJ, Barnaul, handloads and MFS very well.

grimjaw has a point. I have two CZ82s and the rifling does not look the same in these pistols. One is very evidently "twisted", for lack of a better description, and the facets are easy to see. The other barrel is smooth, and I have to hold it a certain way in a certain light to see any hint of the "twist".

I have a theory, I belive some of the guns were actually shot before being sold to us, and some of them were shot a lot. I know the rave is on for the "great buy" the CZ82 represents, but the fact is some of these are well used and/ or used up.

Yeep. They're are chrome lined as well.

Can you reference that statement. The only place I've seen it is in forums, but never have I found it in any official specs. Can you provide an authoritative source for that statement please?

I have a Kahr mk9 with polygonal rifling and I can see the "twists" quite clearly. People are smarter than I am when it comes to this, so you can take what I said with a grain of salt. But, like I said, I can clearly see some rifling.

lulz. polygonal rifling. you owned yourself, there was nothing wrong with the gun. cz-82's all look like that.

Here is the foot note from AIM on the CZ-82 pistols they sell.

AIM said:
***Note on Polygonal Rifling! Please do not be alarmed if the bore of your CZ-82 pistol appears to be smooth. Polygonal Rifling replaces traditional lands and grooves with a rounded polygonal pattern that has a more "hills and valleys" appearance. Advantages to Polygonal Rifling include: Higher bullet velocities due to reduced friction from lesser surface area than traditional rifling. Reduced bullet deformation and drag for increased accuracy/range. Longer barrel life, and reduced buildup of copper or lead.

$159 is a great deal. They usually command $200+ at gun shops. The 9x18 MAK round is an awesome defense round as well. Hornady makes an XST HP for it that is as good as any 9mm Luger IMHO.

If you do a google search on "CZ82 rifling", you will get pages of hits on this subject.
My CZ82 also looks smooth, with barely a hint of visable twist. It is extremely accurate. Those with chronographs report higher velocities, as well.
As to the claim above that some of these are "used up", I have yet to read a post on any of the sites I go to claiming anything but excellent accuracy from these pistols.

As to being used up, that reference was more towards the guns and it's wearable parts as a whole. Some have had serious problems and are obviously used and worn out. I've seen them with my own eyes. Some are in great shape and some aren't. There are numerous reports of worn; sears, springs, mag release mechanisms, as well as missing parts.

I also believe some barrels have obvious polygonal rifling and others don't. What the cause is, I don't know, but I do know there are differences. Could be the tooling was wearing out... who knows.

Thread title should be CZ-82 and why it is important to research guns. Live and learn and an understandable mistake. Btw 159 is a good price.

if you run a bunch of lead bullets thru a CZ 82 you can see the "twist".be warned, lead bullets in a Poly barrel are a manufactors no-no.though,I have done it without any problems. jwr
