For my HS senior project, I'm going to construct a 1:1 scale cutaway non-functioning model of my own rifle design.

(Thesis: "Modern Shouldered Small Arms Design and Development")

 Yes, that's right! My project thesis has been approved by the school board and the grad. project board. Now, I have to get my final mentor and product proposals approved so that I can start. For my model, I want to design a 7.62x25mm semi-auto tube gun. They're simple and inexpensive. Right now, I'm looking for parts donations. Here's a list:

-torched ak barrel stub or any .30 cal barrel
-pps43 mags
-pps43 bolt or measured drawing
-sten recoil springs
-7.62x25 dummy rounds or spent brass
-AK/ FAL/ CETME grips, fcgs, muzzle attatchments, or other parts
-springs, pins, and other internals

*If I'm unable to get our school resource officer's help, I'll just present pictures of my model.*

My idea:

If I can't get enough donations, I have a small business selling bullet necklaces and keychains:

If you'd like to support this project, there are several ways to do so:
1 send parts
2 buy a bullet necklace
3 paypal funds
4 knowlege and positive feedback are just as good

just a heads up. id be very careful in regards to anything that could fall under the NFA. be sure that it in no way could possibly function.

To avoid firearm classification, I'll cut out most of the chamber as well as a portion of the barrel. The barrel will be welded to the receiver tube before the tube is cut. A piece of solid tool steel bar stock will make up most of the barrel (like the springfield drill rifles). There will be no firing pin and the entire model will only be capable of cycling dummy rounds.

Hey a mpl34f1 .......... cool project!

I made a paintball gun based on a sten , a sterling and the F1 ausie smg gun. I think the Aust F1 looks cool .........or rather unique.

I made a dummy sten as a HS metal shop project way back. Hard to do these days.

what state do you live in?

this sounds alot like the nc graduation project

first thing first id make a meeting with the principle and the resource officer to set a plan of how you will present just so you wont have any problems

print out any and all paper work showing requirements for a dummy rifle

what are you planning on using for a reciever?

Not much of a project if it's only meant to hand-cycle dummy rounds...why not go the for the whole enchilada and make a functional gun?

If you do, I would start with the FCG. Once you know what FCG you will use (and I am assuming you'd pick an existing design, like an AR or AK set) you will be able to plan where the bolt must lock up so the hammer will hit the firing pin, and then you can locate the magazine well, and so on. The FCG is a good starting point, IMO.

There are good resources out there for semiauto Sten, Suomi, PPS-43, PPSh-41, Beretta M38, and other tube gun builds...

Good luck! It will be fun to work on.

I'd suggest trying to go the functional route; and here's my thinking: It would be a lot more fun/have more value to you in the long run, as well as more purpose, and there's no added expense if done right. The downside is firearms and schools don't mix - So what i would do is try to make a real, working gun that complies with your local laws (so no smg, unfortunately!) and, after plenty of discussion with your advisor and perhaps principal...cause suspensions and expulsions look terrible on a college ap....i'd leave a critical part of the gun at home on show-and-tell day; like the bolt...so everyone knows the gun can't operate. I imagine you could sub out the bolt with a block of wood, or the barrel with some PVC, have it legal for school - and then go home, drop the real part, and truly enjoy.

Your idea has a lot of learning and a lot of fun potential; but i'd be concerned about some bleeding-heart pottery teacher, etc., causing an unneeded situation given the type of weapon you're interested in, and your CG pix. Are those yours? if so, well done. So i'd also include this alternative: how bout a blackpowder build kit? you can remove the lock to show the inner workings, there's just as much t&a involved, and a properly selected model will have some historical value as well as the scientific aspect. i think it would probably be a more PC option for a wider audience, and when high school is over, you can use it during deer season...and not just as a paperweight!

i've got some 7.62 Tok brass that i'll probably never use... PM sent.

i dont have much to contribute but a good luck and a word of warning make sure youre not breaking any laws. the last thing youneed is for your senior project to land you in jail. best of luck and hope you post pics when its done.

So long as it is:

1) Semi-Auto Only
2) Greater Than 26" in Overall Length
3) With a barrel greater than 16" in length
4) In a caliber of .500" or less
5) And built for Personal Use Only (not for resale)

It is entirely legal, assuming you are at least 18 yrs old and you live in a free state (IE not NY, CA, MA, CT, or NJ) to manufacture firearms for personal use. You can even manufacture certain NFA items such as SBR's, SBSG's, Silencers, and AOW's, assuming your state doesn't forbid the possession of such devices. Pretty much the only thing you can't manufacture for your own use are machineguns, explosives, and some destructive devices.

Go read ATF's firearm FAQ's at www.ATF.gov

They're not hard to get along with, so if you have a question that isn't covered in the FAQ, just give the local branch office a ring and ask them. You don't even have to identify yourself if you don't want to.

IMO, it isn't a worthy project if you don't build a functional firearm.

Any boob can make a spring loaded brass tosser. A fully functional and safe firearm is a much different story.

Good luck, and be safe.

Or if the receiver is cut away in a fashion that effectively demills it. For example, large portions of the receiver, half the chamber, etc. In this case, it will not be considered a firearm.

Anyone notice the project's due date? December 12, 2008.

i think that may be the date due for the proposal, not the project. notice how its signed the day before... typical HS student ( i know, i was the same way)

I didn't think of that... It's been a long time since I was in High School. Heck, It's been a long time since my kids were in High School.

Damn I feel old. :(

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'll be talking to my school's resource officer about my options soon.

Hoppy, you're right; the approval was due that day.. the project will be due next school year.

new option

I talked to my school's resource officer today and he said there's be no problem with transporting a "firearm" onto school property as long as he is the one who takes it on/ off campus. YAY

I guess this opens up the option of making a functional piece and presenting it with a bolt that has no provisions for a firing pin.

I'd feel better not cutting-up a perfectly good ppsh-41 barrel anyway. :)

Now I need the principal's OK so I have some backup when submitting my product proposal.

Good Luck with everything and it's nice to hear there are still a few free schools out there.

On a side note, earlier this week they locked down a school in Sioux Falls, SD because someone was spotted with a gun. Turned out to be a BLUE plastic gun which fired the little darts with the suction cups on the end of it.

The two kids in question were expelled apparently and other charges are pending all this in South Dakota no less. What the hell is this country coming to?

I graduated in '92 from Redwood Falls, MN Quite often myself and friends would bring our .22's or shotguns, sometimes pistols on the buss in cases. Drop them off at the principals office without any questions/concerns and pick them up at the end of the day and take the buss home to whichever friends house we were going to.

Quite a few of us had various stiletto and switch blade knifes that on more than one ocassion would show them to various teachers.
