New member here - I haven't read enough yet to figure out where exactly to post questions - I figured this was the most likely area for this. Please move it if I'm wrong.
I aquired some guns that have been sitting in a basement for MANY years. Some were in cases, some not. Many have mildew and rust on them - some not too bad, and some have areas of pretty severe surface rust (feels like 80 grit sandpaper) on the outside of the barrels. How would you guys suggest I tackle this?? I really do not want to take them to gunsmiths as right now I don't have the $$ to do that. I just want to get them apart somewhat and get them cleaned and in condition so that they aren't getting any worse. Some of the wood stocks have water/mildew damage on the outside finishes. Most of these are late 60's/early 70's vintage just so you know. I do have experience with guns and shooting/etc - but this is gonna be a pretty big project for me. Any suggestions are appreciated - types of cleaner, oils, bluing, stock finishes, sandpaper for the rust, whatever. Thank You in advance!

Get a package of 0000 (Extra Fine) Steel Wool, and a bottle of gun cleaning solvent. Hoppies #9, CLP, etc.

You can use those to remove all surface rust without harming the remaining bluing.

Use the steel wool & Lemon Oil Furniture Polish on the wood.

Heres more on rust:

If the rust is so bad as to require sandpaper & re-bluing, you are in over your head.

Cold blue is not a satisfactory finish as it won't stay on as long as it takes you to do it properly.

If the guns are worth anything, they would be worth having them professionally re-blued with a hot tank blue set-up, proper buffing polishing equipment, skill, knowledge, etc..

Thanks for the link. I have some that I think the steel wool method will work on and a couple that it won't. Any Idea how much a gunsmith would charge to do an Ithaca SKB side by side with pretty serious rust on one side of the barrel??

Ok, help me understand a little here. This gun I have is probably 1968 vintage, give or take a few. I don't think the "rust bluing" would be correct since it is "blue blued" from the factory. I don't think it has ever been fired, but it sat in a case in a basement for over 25 years. One side of the barrel is rusty. The other one in the pic has just some one the end of the barrel on one side. I got three of these, these two and one new in the box still that has the receiver silver plated and engraved. Any idea what these might be worth? Below are a couple bad pics I just snapped with my cell just to try to give you an idea.

Well, I couldn't swear to it that the SKB barrels & ribs were soft soldered. They might have been induction silver brased for all I know.

But what I am saying is, only a shop specilizing in re-bluing double guns would know for certain.

No hot-blue refinishing shop would chance dropping a double gun barrel in a bluing tank!

Bluing is rust.
Just fancy black rust!

I suggest you get a can of Kroils and some 0000 steel wool. The Kroils will do an amazing job on rust.

"Not trying to hijack this thread, but what is rust blued?

And, how is it done"

This is the brown coating you find on older weapons. It was originally done using Horse urine and allowing the metal to sit in some damp sawdust for a few days.

That is not correct.
What you are refering too is "Browning" and it is not the same thing as Rust Bluing.

Rust bluing is almost a satin blue-black, and you would find it on some older Winchester 21's, Parkers & L.C. Smiths, etc., as well as any best grade English double.

I went on that one website that was posted - and it looked to me like they were talking about a brown color by "rust bluing". Maybe I'm mistaken. I admit I don't know much about old guns (pre '65)...
That bottom pic does look nice!

I'll try to give these a basic cleaning next week and see what from there...

RCMODEL...you're correct and i was under the assunption that he was referring to browning.

I love those old BLUED rifles, too bad they don't do that any more.
