He gets the facts and concepts wrong and in doing so adds to the Miami Herald's history of poorly crafted articles and editorials that lack any type of real research and focus more on the same old talking points and emotionally charged arguments.

You have to love how he throws the "MAC-10s" in at the end. I was expecting at some point to read either the phrase "AK-47" or "MAC-10". Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed.

Does it surprise anybody to have a fiction writer writing for the Herald under the guise of non-fiction?

Well, write a well-composed rebuttal. Research the issue carefully and fully, then tell the truth.

Don't stoop to name calling.
Don't get weird.
Don't sound like the paranoid freak they're expecting.
Don't disseminate lies.

Just tell the truth.

Man, remember the '90s, when he was funny?

I think he's just so burned out that he's looking, desperately, for anything to satirize. Unfortunately, that doesn't even rate as good satire, it's just sophomoric drivel...

I know that in some ways he was trying to be funny, but in the end, it wasn't funny. I think he was trying to be 20% funny, and 80% serious.

Several years ago...6 or 8 maybe...I was in Pickett St. Park. It is truly in the boonies and we were maybe five miles from the ranger station. We had pulled off in a observation /overlook area. We were about to leave when seven guys on 4-wheelers rounded a curve, covered the quarter mile, and were in the parking lot... all around our car.

Made for some very antsy minutes. Let me point out- there were no threats or comments. Nothing happened. We got in the car, one guy moved, we left...as planned. Point is, if evil had been intended, there was NO HELP coming for us. No cell phone service. Horn honk...USELESS.

We need the right to carry in the parks. Rangers cannot be everywhere! WE all know that...and so do the bad guys.

Mark

ps: I only had 6 rounds of .38 special. :what:

Had one of our anti-gun doctors at work a couple of days ago greet me with "Did you hear? You should be happy now. You can carry a gun in all the parks!"

I just said "Read it again. All it says is that the law on the outside of the fence is the same as the law on the inside of the fence. Nothing else." Then I shrugged like "Big Deal".

She kind of stopped for a minute and said "Oh." End of conversation.

"ps: I only had 6 rounds of .38 special. "

yeah, but how many pounds of car did you have?

Even a Honda Civic can push a 4-wheeler ATV out of the way easy.:D

I like Hiaasen. Some of his stuff is still funny. Skinny Dip (2004) comes to mind. On his editorials about self defense and state's rights, obviously I disagree.

I'm not sure what's worse. This idiots poorly thought out, poorly researched, or poorly written article, the fact that someone actually published this crap, or the comments referring to gun owners as small-brained freaks.
What a joke. Then I saw this idiot wrote the book the movie "strip-tease" was based on. Wish I knew that before I read the article. I would have realized how bad this guys writing was and saved myself the three minutes of my life I just wasted.

Carl Hiaasen comments...

This meatwhistle is a mediocre writer of third rate novels who is likely looking for some publicity to shore up declining book sales. The Miami Herald is another paper circling the drain. In a year both will be gone like flatulence in the wind.

The Miami Herald is another paper circling the drain.

I can't say I feel any sympathy for them if that is true. It's not even just the sheer number of anti-gun articles that has led me to dislike it. Those are just icing on the urinal cake that is the Miami Herald. The reporting in general is sub-par IMO. I felt that way long before I was even pro-gun or owned any firearms. They have some good articles in there, but it's outweighed by the amount of garbage. They need to really rebuild their paper if they want it to succeed long-term.

gone like flatulence in the wind.

You've obviously never been to my house when we make mexican food. We could all be outdoors eating with a hurricane blowing and you'd still pass out.

Anyways, at least I can say we've found somebody more anti-gun than Fred Grimm or Ana Menendez, two other wonderful Herald columnists.
