I have a case and a half of Wolf Match Extra bought a number of years ago when I was shooting competition rifle silhouette. Dont shoot that anymore but would like to get a 617 to shoot it.

However, the WME is waxed and is sticky in many guns. I have a Buckmark that wont shoot it. Will I have the same problem with the 617?

Thanks,
Burt

Well, the 617 being a revolver, you shouldn't have any feeding problems with it. Probably no extraction problems, either.

The 617 is now going for $600+. It is an interesting lite weight gun with a J frame and 4 inches of barrel. The bummer is that it is too lite weight to get any accuracy. If your plinking then it is fun. If your trying to target shoot then forget it. But it will shoot any 22lr you give it without problems.

I was under the impression that the 617 was a K-frame. :scrutiny:

Personally, I prefer the blued, six-shot K-22s to the 'modern' 617. My Outdoorsman and 17-3 both shoot more accurately than I can hold.

You're probably thinking of a Model 63. The 617 is a k-frame, and very accurate. It's the descendent of the K-22 Target Masterpiece. And it ought to shoot anything you feed it.

Here is my 4" 617 10-shooter K-frame bought new 9/08 for $609 + s/t - and a good buy then. They list for $916 or more now. If you find one for $600, it's likely used. The other revolver is a 627 Pro, an 8-shot .357 Magnum N-frame - at 41.2 oz, it weighs only an ounce or two more than the 617. Both sport aftermarket Ahrends Retro Target grips in cocobolo - the 617's is a homebrew penetrating oil/resin while the 627's is factory finish.

The 617 has lockwork like other K/L/N frames with a leaf hammer spring, as opposed to the J-frame's coil spring. The 617 will thus have a better DA trigger than the 63 others mentioned. Even the SS 5" 63 is over $600 discounted now - as is the Al framed/cylindered 3" 317 Kit gun, another J-frame. They are partially lugged 8-shooters.

Stainz

PS Any of them would like that Wolf ammo!

I have both the 317 and 617. Both were definitely worth the money as the 317 is ultralight and the 617 is very accurate. I've come close to buying the 63 as well, but last time I was ready to, I found a 29-3 for $525. The downside to the S&W .22's being so well built is that they cost as much as the higher caliber guns.

The 617 is a k frame and is not a lite weight, It's pretty close to the weight of my 6" model 19. It is pretty darn accurate too! Wolf Match is tough to eject in mine.
