Hey all,

My birthday is coming up this fall, and seeing as how I'll be deployed/underway for it AND Christmas, my girl is offering to buy me a new rifle as a combined gift. (she's a keeper)

She knows I needed a hunting rifle, she DOESN'T know that I went out and bought a .30-06 (Thompson/Center Venture) recently. We don't live together yet, so SSHHHHH!! She's bent on getting me a rifle, but now that I already own the do-it-all caliber, what should I wish for!?!?!

Preferences:
wood stock
deer caliber

preferably around $700 or less (i'll add the scope myself)
classy (something i can pass down to my kids, whenever they enter this world)

i have some ideas but i want to hear what y'all think!
Thanks in advance!

wow...so many choices...so little time!

what type action you want?

heres my choices for various ones:

1. bolt -- browning a bolt in .30-06 or .300 Win mag OR tikka in same cals
2. lever -- marlin 336 in .30-30 or .35 whelen
3. auto -- BLR in .308 or .30-06
4. single shot -- gotta go with the tc encore

Savage 14 Classic

You've already got a .30-06, you need something milder.

Personally, I'd get a .223, but you might opt for the .243 for deer.

Remington 700 action -- BDL -- in .270 win.
Load your 30-06 heavy and the .270 light and go hunting! :D

Actually you can load a 30-06 heavy or light. How about a .223 for varmint hunting as well as just plain fun to shoot. The 30-06 has the versatility to cover most any large animal in the original 48.

What ever you decide on we need pics when you get it. :D

I don't think you will see a marlin 336 or even an 1895 in 35 Whelen. You might get a 1895 Winchester rebarreled in it though.

... there is obviously only one choice here, Savage american classic, in 243.
you cannot top it, and it is a beaut.

or the euro

and of course, the 243, is the varmint cal, from pdogs to whitetails, and from 0 to 500 yds, no probs.
and if you handload, throw in some 105-110 vld rounds , for some 1000 yd shooting.
look at the twist rate for 243; 1/9.25--- just begging for some ultra long shots.

if you want some sheer beauty, then I would go the browning, BUT NOT, if it does not have the same twist rate as the Savage. the 1/9.25 twist, is really, the do it all twist for the 243. and nothing, not even big hogs, can escape the hellfire that is the 243 bullet, doing about 3100 fps from a muzzle.

Can't go wrong with a Savage. I would consider a .308 or another 30-06 as well, certainly if you reload or plan to in the future.

But hey, a .243 might be the ticket for getting your girl to go hunting, or at least get her to join you at the range sometime.

Marlin 1894 in .44 mag.

Heck of a nice little brush buster.

Or a 336, or 1895... :)
