Whats a good coyote rifle?

Doesn't anyone use .270 for W.E.C. anymore? Growing up, I think I have used everything on 'em. 12 guage, 30-06, .22LR. - basically whatever happened to be handy at the time.

I use a Savage Model 25 Lightweight Varminter Thumbhole in .223 with a Redfield 3x-9x scope. I don't reload, and I'm a noob distance-shooter, but it sure is purdy, and is a fun rifle... so I love it!

Sorry, I know this isn't much help... :D

Take a look at the FN 98 Mauser action 6.5-284 in a 26" barrel with 1/10" twist No. 5 Tobler Stainless Barrel. Mount a 4-12X50 Swarovski Scope.
Where would one find this rifle for sale or is this going with something custom barreled?

Light recoil, for when those...less than spectacular shooting skills rear there ugly head and a follow up shot at a high speed yote is on call.

Flat trajectory... always good, no matter what the quarry!

Explosive results....pretty much the bullets duty. You need speed for this phenomenon. A 45-70 will pull a yotes ticket just as well as a 22-250 will, but the 22-250 will make more pink snow!

So...Light recoil, flat trajectory and explosive results....

I like the 22-250 or the 26-06 or any of the 6mm's or the 243 or the 257's, or the 223 or the 204 or the 220 swift or any of the 6.5's, or the..... and it goes on!

I like the 22-250! No recoil, super flat and it has an excellent spat factor!

Lots of good ideas so far, and some interesting stuff I hadn't thought of. I'm surprised to see a few people mention the .243 and .270, traditionally larger game bullets. I've got .223 AR, but it's a carbine and in "evil black", so I was thinking that something with a longer barrel and camo may produce better results. I wasn't expecting so many people to support the .223, since the 204 and 22-250 are somewhat flatter shooting.

Any accurate sporter-weight 22-250 with a 3x-9x scope.

It knocks thier socks clean off as far as you can see them!

Heavy-barrels & long barrels and such are a royal PITA when it comes to getting in & out of trucks, walking long distances, and calling in the brush.

Through the last nearly 50 years I have hunted them with .22RF, .22 Mag, 222 Rem, .223, 22-250, .220 Swift, 243, 6mm Rem, 25-06, 270,.30-30, and 30-06.

The 22-250 & .220 Swift beats them all for killing coyotes DRT!

I bought a les baer super varmint (.204 ruger) just for coyotes and sage rats and jack rabbits and it is an outstanding rifle. But it is pretty dam heavy and it sucks when you are walking and calling dogs. It is great when you can just sit in one place for a long time and you can see a long ways. My next coyote rifle will be a light bolt gun in some thing bigger than .204, the 20 cal round works but at longish range its pretty easy to wound a dog and have him run off. I am thinking 243 or 25-06. That being said two weeks ago I got a coyote with my cz 550 375 HnH and let me tell you that 260 grain nosler acubond put a stop to that dog like nothing I have ever seen.

The last "Ultimate Coyote Rifle" I built for myself was a 25-06.

I'm here to tell you it doesn't kill them as decisively every time as my old .22-250 or Swift.

Too much power blows off big chunks sometimes, and they run off to die somewhere else. I had one with a front leg blown clear off make it over 1/4 mile before it died.

The 22-250 & 220 Swift puts a bullet in the boiler room, where it violently explodes inside and dumps 100% of it's energy.

What you get is a coyote full of mush that falls over dead without a twitch.

It's all about what YOU want to use. I know people who use .204 and .223. When I used to coyote hunt, I used a .30-06 with light grain bullets. I think I'm going to get a .308 this winter for coyotes because I really want to get into it again.

IMO, a good coyote "rifle" is my O/U 2-bbl combo longgun in .223 Rem / 12 gauge. It's a Baikal/Rem Spartan. #4, #3, #2, or #1 buck for close shots, .223 for longer shots.

This also makes a good fall turkey gun.

But pretty much any centerfire rifle, .22 to .25 caliber, that is accurate enough to make a longish hit with, and light enough to tote a ways, will work.

I agree...
But personally I use my model 70 .243 Win. It kills them right now every time, and with a good hard bullet construction the exit hole isn't bad. I have zero desire to use anything else. If you don't care about the pelts then I think the .243 or similar is the way to go; great for short or long shots and it puts them down right now. If you do care about pelts then use a light grain hollow point or a solid big game bullet and it still is great. Plus you can shoot a long ways if you're set up fot it. Either way get set up and git after them dogs, the deer and deer hunters thank you!

A CZ 527 American in .223 works just fine and is easy on the wallet as well.
I use a CZ 527 American in .204 for coyotes. Knocks them flat without destroying the pelt. The vast majority of coyotes that I kill are under 100 yards and a quick light handling rifle is the ticket. I no longer use a "varmint" or "heavy sporter" profile unless I am the long range shooter on a team. Then I use a 7mm Rem. Mag.

I've got an AR-15 in 204 Ruger and a Remington 700 BDL in 22-250. In my opinion it's tough to beat either one. Varmint style AR's tend to get heavy pretty quick. I'm a fairly fit guy so I don't mind hauling it around.

Even though I don't actually own one, for an all around varmint gun, an AR-15 in 223 gives you the most options. I'd recommend something in about 20" and a fairly light wt barrel.
