Hi all, got a quick question about Mosin Nagants for the enthusiasts out there. I'm looking for something that I can shoot at the local club's service rifle matches, maybe do some varmint hunting as well, and also just to bang around with at the shooting range. AIM Surplus has the 91/30 Mosin Nagants for $90 or so (if you add the $10 for a hand picked rifle), and from what I've read those guns are built like tanks and just don't break. So what I would love to know is...

1) Does anyone here have this gun, and would they recommend or not recommend it?

2) Does anyone have experience shopping with AIM, and what was the rifle like that they received (I don't need a beauty queen rifle, but something covered in dings, rust, and enough cosmoline to suffocate a horse is not what I have in mind either)? Condition of the bore and rifling?

3) Will an online firearms shop send the rifle to my local FFL even if my name isn't on the paper? The way the website has worded the buying guide, it sounds like you need to be the one with the FFL.

Edited to add: is interordnance any better or different than AIM?

Thanks very much and have a great Thanksgiving!

i have 2 91/30 from big 5 ( CAI ) not sure the accuracy is anything to brag on but that could vary. Solid guns. I'm happy with them.

I am sure they will ship to your ffl who will probably charge something for the transfer ( You might be able to shop around for the best deal on a transfer fee ) here in ca we also pay for the background check and have a waiting period.

Happy Thankgiving & enjoy your new gun

I have 5 Mosin Nagant rifles from Aim, as well as about 5 SKS's. They were very nice rifles IMO. Good bores, bluing was great, and wood was sound with few blemishes. Keep in mind they are surplus/rearsenaled. I bought mine around 2004-2005. I had a C&R 03 FFL back then. I'd recomend them. You just need to choose someone with and FFL and get them to send a copy of their FFL with your order to Aim. Wait until the FFL calls you to pick up the rifle and take it home.

I've ordered from Interordnance before too. Was pleased with the two orders I did through them. That was around 2003.

one of mine i would recommend-- 1 moa and the bolt is smooth
with no hang ups. i lightened the trigger. +good overall
another is 3 moa and sticky.
thinking about the many i have seen at the club--

a lot depends on the luck of the draw

i am refering to MN's from 5+ years ago--#'s matching in very nice condition.
what is being marketed today i have no experience with

I love my 91/30 (from Big 5 Sporting Store). I believe the Soviet WW-II accuracy requirement was ~ 3.5MOA. Especially accurate rifles were taken off the line to become snipers. Figure your average MN's accuracy will be somewhere in between.

The regular modifications (bedding, free floating, trigger-work - all which you can easily do yourself at home!) will probably improve accuracy enough for coyote-sized varmint at 200 meters, prairie-dogs at 400 meters, mmmm, probably not.

Answers:

1) Yes, I have about a dozen or so, of various flavors. My opinion is that everyone should own at least 1-2 Mosins.

2) Yes. I've had several transactions with AIM. Always a pleasure to deal with. I bought 2 of the 91/30's from AIM in the last 6-7 months. Both of them were in excellent condition. 1 was '27 Ex Dragoon, the other was a '32 Tula. Pay the extra $10 for a handpicked one. I always pay this and have never regretted it for what I've received from them. The bores were excellent. All of these particular rifles were rearsenaled.

3). Yes. Shop around with a few local gunshops to compare a FFL transfer fee. Likely somewhere between $20-$60. Another option is to get a C&r license and they can ship it t o your home. It will take about 2-3 months to obtain the lincense though.

You'll love the Mosin.
If you want a more accurate rifle get one of the Finn Mosins AIM is offering right now.
The Russins made the Mosin.
The Finns made them right. ;)
