Convince MTNBKR he needs to buy the .35 Whelen he saw...

He wants it. He needs it.

'cuz I've got factory .35 Remington brass to send him if he does get it! ;)

Wow, free brass! Now he's gotta get it!

Besides, when he goes to the range, he won't have people on both sides of him shooting the same round.

And in case of bear epidemics, or giant mutant zombies, he's gonne need that extra penetration...

WWBGD?

(What would Burt Gummer do?)

You are an evil evil man Mike. :D

already got that in a 6.5x55. :neener:

I'd like to buy it, but I just can't right now. If it's there after Xmas, I'll reconsider. If not, it wasn't meant to be.

Besides, my 6.5x55 is keeping me busy with handload experimentation. All I need right now is yet another caliber I have to handload. :scrutiny:

You need to get it if for no other reason than the good COL that it was named after was one hell of an outdoorsman, one that we should be proud to emulate. 'Twould be a shame to let his name die off into a gun geek Trivial Pursuit question.

I've shot it a few rounds (& have it on my "someday" list) and certainly enjoyed it. However it does seem to be a bit more gun than you really need there on the east coast. Therefore I'll call Mike's telling you that you need to get it and raise you that you need to move off to somewhere where you can really use it  (& I wish I could be joining you out there sooner than I think that it will be happening shrug.gif . Ah well, sometimes life gets in the way of the best laid plans ;) ).

Not when you consider how far off he was when he bought the 6.5 - he was really after a .338! So, by that logic, the Whelen is woefully underpowered...

LOL. You remember that? Geez, that seems so long ago...

Actually, I wanted "something" over .30. I started with the 35whelen, but when I couldn't find one, I decided on the 338 since I have shot one more than once and didn't find the experience too punishing. I'm happy I got talked into the 6.5 though. I've shot it more at one range session than I would've fired the 338 all year.

.30-06 is more rifle than is needed in the East.

.45-70 is more rifle than is needed in the East.

.300 Win. Mag. is more rifle than is needed in the East.

Luckily it's not a case of need....

Following this logic my .260 Rem and mtnbker's 6.5x55mm Swede are just right! :scrutiny: Not only that, but we have major penetration capability at our disposal with these rounds. YAY!

mtnbkr,
Let me know how that .35 Whelen shoots please. I've been thinking I might just have to get one. ;) (A nice sporterized '03 would be PERFECT...):

"Following this logic my .260 Rem and mtnbker's 6.5x55mm Swede are just right!"

Well, more than one gun writer has stated in print that for Eastern hunting rounds between the .243 and 7mm-08 are about as perfect as you can get.

If I were going to downsize, I'd probably go with a .250 Savage, although a pet project I've had in the back of my mind for many years is to get a Remington 700 with a 24" barrel and have it chambered for 6.5x50 Arisaka...

.35 Whelen is just a classy cartridge. All business, no flash. Just a workhouse capable of taking any game in the world, in a pinch, without beating you up much in the process.

Just ask yourself if you're willing to lose the rifle is someone else sees it before January.

In present day society, a big game rifle is pretty much of a luxery item. We really enjoy them, but can live without them. Having a number of them is certainly not madatory but nice.
This rifle on the other hand is something you can't do without. You might as well face the fact that there is no point in going on without it. There are rifles, and then there is THIS rifle. You would be cheating yourself to let the sun set another day without owning it. Don't do it to yourself, I beg of you.

At present I own two 6.5 x 55 rifles. If I ever see you at a range shooting yours, I will shoot one and provide one to the guy on the other side of you so that the guys on BOTH sides of you are shooting 6.5s.

Took my first deer with my .35 Whelen Rem 700 this afternoon. A nice doe, about 100 lbs. She took two convulsive bounds, sank, and didn't move again.

Hmmm...a .35 Whelan...

Out of respect to the colonel, be sure to buy an accurate one.:)

It shoots big bullets at medium velocity, which makes deer, elk, and bear very dead very quick, without ruining a bunch of meat.

All in all you could sum it up by saying it hits harder on the front end, than on the back end.:)
