Just got in from walking the pup for the night. As we rounded the corner of the house onto the lawn a shadow flew across my line-of-sight. What is it? A coyote. No kidding.

FWIW, the 'yote was bigger than my pup (9 month old yellow lab) and Bullet is 60+ pounds now. That doggie musta been close to 80! :)

Sorry, this is just for every Westerner that thinks a 50 pound coyote is a big'un! :D

They say eastern coyotes are larger/much larger due to plentiful food: deer, rabbits, squirrels, cats, dogs, etc. You were armed, right? Glock 19 beter than American Express, except in the woods, then its a .357 Blackhawk!!

OneSat about noon my wife said "Look, a fox!" I figured a cat...sure enough, a fox, in the yard, at noon! Go figure. No The 19 was a few yards away on a shelf in the garage.

I'm in the southwestern part of the state, almost in Vermont, almost in Mass. South of a little berg called Keene.

No, I was not armed. I've been backpacking in bear country unarmed. The animals are not my fear! :)

Edited: Black bear country in the northern part of the state.

I'm also in the Monadnock region and see 'yotes all the time now. I've shot several that were over 40 lbs and have seen some at night that looked a lot bigger than that.

Coyotes are in Los Angeles and there's one in San Francisco too. Wiley Coyote is everywhere.

That big it MIGHT be a Coy-dog.

A lot more dangerous than coyotes. Doesn't know if its a dog or a wild animal. Kinda like a scrappy wolf hybrid.

These guys get everywhere. I know of at least one coyote in metro seattle that makes frequent appearences at night/early morning. I named him Jimmy. For about a year noone believed me and went as far as to question what i was smoking on my shift. I finally caught him on camera while he was stalking one of the neighborhood cats (shouldnt have interrupted WAY too many cats running lose around here).

inGobwetrust,

There is a strong possibility. Ever shoot Highpower or Rec Pistol up there? Or even just generally shoot? I am usually using a G-17, AR-15 DCM, a Remington Mountain Rifle or any of a few others. :) Young guy, I'm 19 but you'd probably think I'm 15. Nathan's the name.

hey guys i'm in MA just south of fitzwilly. i've seen a coyote on my way to work in ashburnham. they have also been spotted in the outskirts of Fitchburg. the one saw looked pretty healthy too. plenty of food around for them to eat!

My SIL had one. Pretty animal, and good with children, but the dog kept chewing through the chain link gate to our kennel!

Saw a coyote yesterday

Western NY. Saw a pretty large coyote yesterday while I was sitting in my ground blind deer hunting. It looked like a miniature German shepard dog..definitely not small at all. It was running pretty quick and going the wrong way for me to get a shot off (hard cover of my ground stand which is made of fallen trees and one live tree). I never did see any deer :(

How dangerous are they? People fear dogs more than anything else, and a wild one would be even worse! I am never going out on the property unarmed again, or is that a bit of an overreaction?

From what I've heard, 'yotes will avoid you. Feral dogs and coy-dogs...?

Byron was treed by a pack of wild dogs when he was younger. They trailed him for some time, so the reasonable explanation is, they were hungry, and thought he was lunch. He was unarmed, and sat in the tree for hours, waiting for them to leave!

Never happen today. :D

Most wildlife will avoid you. To them you smell of one thing. Trouble. The people getting attacked by pumas are acting like prey. I told you running was bad for you.
A coyote in the back yard is nothing though. You see Letterman about 3 weeks ago. Had a black bear in his house in Montana, I think it was. (Letterman doesn't strike me as the outdoorsy type) Letterman was there at the time and hear a noise. He said he thought it was somebody he knew making coffee. It was Yogi eating his fridge. Letterman had pictures and a severely damaged crisper drawer. Apparently it had a nap on one of the beds for a while, wrecked his fridge and left.

"The coyote is a survivor, I reckon he's got to be.
He lives in the snow at 40 below and in Malibu by the sea ..."

Apparently [the bear] had a nap on one of the beds for a while, wrecked his fridge and left.
The bed must not have been too soft or too hard ...
:D

I'm at CCF&G a lot on the weekends. I work in Boston so it's tough to get there much during the week. I'm usually shooting a 45-70 of one flavor or another, an AR, a Contender Carbine, Sig P220 or P228, or a Mauser '06 or...well, you get the idea! I drive a brownish-gold Grand Caravan and usually have one or two kids with me, gotta start them young! Come up and say "hi". Look for the guy with the flat-top, my name's Patrick.

Dadio,

Come up over the border and go shooting some time. Email me and you can come as my guest to the range.

When I see a coyote walking my dog I always unleash the hound. He comes back in a half hour dragging his tongue.
Of course my dog goes 138 pounds and the coyotes around here are more like 30 pounds.
