A stock 617-6 that I purchased a couple of years ago. An excellent gun.

Was wondering if someone can recommend a place to purchase a wooden grip for this?

Cheers

That actually looks like a 617-5, which has a 6-shot cylinder (the -6 has a 10-shot cylinder; no other differences between the two). Looks nice, nevertheless.

Re: where to get grips--

Every gun show I go to, it seems that I need a new set of grips. And every time, D&J Gun Repair is there to address my needs. They're a dealer for Kim Ahrends grips (most of my revolvers wear Ahrends grips that I purchased from D&J), as well as Altamont and Eagle grips.

You can also look on Ebay and Gunbroker for wood grips for a K/L-frame, round-butt (or round-to-square conversions).

Yes, bought in 2006 it is the 617-5" with 6 shot cylinder. I've been away from the gun scene for a couple of years. Apparently the 6" only comes with the 10 shot cylinder now?

Thanks for the link kle.

Since last September, my 617 was bad - very bad. She fooled around with one of my big bore revolvers in the safe (Slut!), and, well, they had an offspring:

Those slutty Ahrends 'Retro Targets' on my 617 must have gotten the big-bore boys attention, as they all sport wood grips. The baby, a 5" 63, sports some Hogue squared grips - comfortable. The little slut screams 'Grab me!! Shhot me!!'. I hope you don't mind the partial family photo... no one fesses up to being Papa. Sad!

My 617 - with it's big-baby offspring, a 5" 63 - still in rubber grips!

Hey people,
since i'm interested in acquiring a 617-6", what sight options would you recommend to have at least an "accuracy run" with that revolver?
I think i will take a Weaver base with it, so... what would you put on it, beside the factory irons, to have an increased accuracy of fire? Red Dot, Scope... thanks.

I use red dot sights when I want optics, in particular the UltraDot sight with 1"/25mm tube and 4moa dot:

I find it makes for easy accuracy out to 50 yards (the furthest I can send a target out at my local indoor range). When I go to open sights, I use either the flat-black Patridge sight (on the stainless 617-6), or a McGivern sight with the gold-bead for fast target acquisition (on the matte-blue 17-8):

Below is my N-frame 629-6 6" with a Weigand SS Weaver rail mounted to the existing rail mount tapped holes. One size rail fits K,L, & N frames with the only choice being blued or SS. Brownell's stocks them ~$30 retail.

Remove the front screw on the existing iron sight and it slides back, with some downward pressure on the rear leaf area. Save that screw and the sight, clean the holes with acetone, lacquer thinner, or alcohol, and use a toothpick's end drop of blue Loctite per screw to mount the rail. Let it dry 20+ hours - then mount your Weaver rings and scope. The one on my 629 is a 2 x 28mm Weaver H2 - I prefer fixed sights - and low power, the scope cross-hairs being a better way for my prebsbyopic eyes to sight - especially with that eyepiece adjusted for my vision.

The blue Loctite breaks it's bond easily - heat from a 25W-30W soldering pencil's dry tip will break it in ~10 seconds. Good thing I took a picture of my 6" 629 so adorned - I like it better with the iron sights, which it sported again in days. The Hogue .500 Magnum grips go on with 'real' Magnums; else, it sports wood grips.

PS Of course, the 6" K-frame will look a tad smaller - and you won't need those grips!

617 Can you wear one out?

Hello friends and neighbors // I'm looking at a 617 SS 6"

Question: Can you wear one out?

This revolver looks great has S&W rubber grips, no lock, very tight lock up(cone almost touches cylinder), rifling looks sharp, probably from the 90"s ... I would have bought it but owner was not there.

I'll let you know in a few years... I am trying to, at least - it is fun to shoot! I guess if it has their lifetime warranty, as mine does, the simple answer is 'No!'.

Just picked up my first Model 617 which I have been wanting for a long time. It is a no dash all original and as far as I can tell barely fired. Can't wait to get out and put some rounds downrange.

My ten-shooter M617 has the four inch barrel. Even so, I can crank off ten shots DA rapid fire and at 25 feet keep 'em all in a three inch or so group. With that piece, and .22LR recoil being what it is, it is like shooting a laser revolver. WOW! I just love shooting that revolver!!

Just how accurate are your 617's. I'm asking cause I have one that's sub par and not sure what to do. With the gun on sandbags at 25 yds I got groups of about 5". I sent it back to smith because of this and other problems. After getting it back some problems have been fixed, others seem worse and since return I did two "groups" at 25 yds rested on bags one 6" the other 10". My normal groups with a .22 semi or revolver with the same testing results in 2" groups maximum. I'm thinking of sending it back but losing faith . Any thoughts? :banghead:

Have you tried using different ammo? With any .22, finding the ammo it likes is key. I use Wally World Federal #750 550-round bulk pack ammo in my 617-4 and 17-8 and they group pretty well at 50 yards (let alone 25). My 617-6 likes CCI Standard Velocity better.

Welcome to The High Road.
