does the 500 s&w make sense?

love my 500 ,its a good hunter in 6.5". I call it my pocket slug gun. All kidding aside it is a fine gun and will absolutley thump a deer. Reminds me of my muzzle loader the way they go down. Mine will never be for sale thats for sure. I say anybody who hunts should get a 480,460,475,or just go ahead and get the 500.I own 44's and 41's and they are fine guns to. But these big guns just plain out perform the old standbys. When I shot all these guns the recoil or blast just wasn't as bad to me as I had heard. I can shoot them as accurate as my 44. However I am partial to that 480 SRH, it handles really good.

Big Horn was the manufacturer I was trying to think off. Looks like they make fine guns, too bad they look to be based on Winchester leverguns!

Just joking, I am a Marlin fanatic though.

The Wild West Guns are a modified Marlin 1895 Guide Gun which may not have been up to the task of firing a .500 S&W lever action. Pure speculation on my part. The Big Horn Armory has beaten them to the market, or will by April 2010, by building the gun rather than modifying an existing gun. I'm looking very much forward to getting my own.

After I get my Big Horn Armory 500 I'll be saving my pennies for a Marlin in 45/70.

RippinSVT You know I have a large quanity of firearms. (Do a previous post seach on me.) I have most of the smallest guns in the world and some the largest legal guns in the world. Most of them I have never shot or maybe just once or twice only. Also I have 7 cars that I maybe drive each 1000 miles or less a year if I have time. I put only 50 miles on my motorcycle.
I do it because I can.
I like guns. There are also other collectors out there. Everyone is different. Please don't dish us for having what we want.
Guns are great. I am obsessed with guns like a gambler likes Casinos.
Now back to 500's

Roger,

Party on man. I have stuff that i don't need either. I have some fast cars and offroad toys that rarely get driven and some guns of all sizes, style, and genres that rarely get shot. My posts weren't aimed at you, nor were they aimed at the majority of this forum. My posts were aimed at the guys who don't appreciate the power of it, but simply buy it because they think it makes them look cool. The very same guys who would buy a Z06 Corvette or a Shelby Cobra, not because they appreciate or understand the fine dynamics and engineering cues, but because they read in a magazine that it was awesome, and they wanted to be seen in it.

Again guys, I wasn't poking fun at people here for owning them, I am poking fun at the guys who buy them and just don't "get what it's all about", as I would say.

Depends on what you want it for... my brother carries one in Kodiak, Alaska (bear deterrent)... where people R-E-A-L-L-Y N-E-E-D something like that... in addition to a long gun when hunting, or the 500 by itself, when not hunting. I can't remember the bullet weight he prefers, only that it's a big heavy lead bullet.

I hear that the deer are the size of dogs in the south so it would probably blow em up? :)

Wow I guess there is a selection for rifles in .500. Pretty cool.

I would like to see the balistics for it out of that lever gun.

If you do happen to order from Ballistic Supply, they are great folks to work with.
I just got my order of their heavy sample pack and am very impressed. will shoot them this weekend. Here's a pix of one of there packages.

nokin, REALLY? i have been trying to order from them for a LONG time and I thought they had been shut down since like June last year. Are they up and running again? I gave up after I started reloading for it, but I wouldn't mind getting their sample pack. All I load are 350 gr......

Hi Captain,
Give them a ping on their email. I believe they are getting very close to opening up in the middle of next month, but currently doing smaller orders over the weekends as time permits so they don't get bombarded all at once. Definitely worth giving them another try.
