New toy 500 S&W (grunt grunt grunt)

I was at the local gun store this weekend when the owner took in a lightly used 4" S&W 500. I have long wanted a truly big bore revolver like a 454, 460 or 500 S&W. The cost of reloading for this thing is scary, and forget about factory loads for it at about $3/round. I would prefer to have the 460 XVR in 5'' or 6 1/2'' configuration but at $850 I decided I just couldn't let it pass me by. I only put $100 down so if a 460 comes in before I finish paying it off I can just get it instead. Heck, I may end up with one of each. This thing is impressive.

For fifty bucks they should have least let you take a picture to post. I keep looking at the 4’ or 5” barreled 500’s, but just can’t talk myself into parting with the cash, especially to feed it. But $850 sounds like a bargain price.

I usually do because someone is always wanting to see the pics. I will take one next weekend. They are only open on the weekends. I can't wait to reload for this beast.

I picked a 4" comped model for about $700 in trade. Just couldn't pass it up haha.

I find 15gr of unique under a 460 gas checked flat point is "enough". It probably will still punch through a buffalo (of which we have none in Ohio).
Their a lot of fun and people definitely love to see it whenever it comes to the range.

Loading for it isn't too bad. Missouri Bullet Manufacturing has a nice 400 grain cast lead bullet. Magnum pistol powders such as H110/296, 'Lil Gun, and 2400 work well. Trail Boss is very nice for light loads.

Midway sometimes has seconds of the Hornady 300 grain flex-tip on sale.

Dies are readily available. Be aware that some early brass was cut for large pistol primers; these occasionally could not stand the pressure and pierced. All new brass is cut to rifle primer depth and has an "R" included in the headstamp. Older brass can be cut to the correct depth with a primer pocket reamer.

They really aren't that bad except for the bullets. If you want to shoot anything heavier than about 400 grains, and what's the point of a 500 Mag if you don't, you'll pay $1 each or more just for bullets.
