Help me pick a new Glock

I currently have a M&P 9c which I like but I want to add another pistol to my collection. The M&P fits my hand well and is my CCW pistol. The glock would be a full size, range/hunting backup/HD/LEGO pistol.

A full size would be more comfortable for long duration range sessions. It would be a hunting backup (pistol caliber is legal for deer in the state but that's another debate) when hunting BP during shotgun season and a full size frame makes more sense during a 0200, half asleep HD event. Being a glock, you can buy virtually anything for it (sights, barrels, trigger work, ect) and that fits my "I need to mess with/modify something" nature.

So, I could stick with 9mm and keep the ammo selection simple or I could get a .40 or 45acp for something different. Then of course there is the "c" variants.

The 9mm appeals to my practical sense (why stock half as much in mixed caliber when I could buy in bulk for one caliber) but getting a 45acp would be a welcome change though ammo costs become an issue for a "range toy". Lastly, I've read that the .40 and 45acp chamber does not fully support the case head which makes me concerned.
 
If you are not loading your own, the case head support is of no consequence, and even if you are, you just need to make sure you are sizing right. And the 3rd gens made an improvement from the earlier ones anyway.

So with that said, how did you settle on Glock? If you already have an M&P and like it and are familiar with it, why not get a full size?

The reason I'm looking at the Glock over M&P for a full size is the aftermarket. I want something I can tinker with as a hobby and tinker with something that isn't a CCW.
 
i normally say the 19, as I believe it to be the best all around size, small enough to carry but big enough to be an effective "fighting" handgun.

but it seems that you wouldn't mind a little larger gun, and it seesm that your ccw needs are taken care of. I say stick with 9mm, cheaper to shoot and or reload. 17 offers you a little more barrel and a little longer sight radius.
 
You've got the carry 9mm covered. So no G19 love here despite my favorite glock model

I voted G21. Make sure and pick one up before you purchase as it does not grip like a 17/22.

High cap .45 would be my ideal "HD" gun
 
Yes, the 19 and 23 are compacts, so I think you can take those off the list if you are looking for a full size frame. Other than that it should mostly come down to caliber choice, all of them should serve you reliably for many years. If I were getting my first, it would be a G17, non-C model. The quintessential Glock. From there you can customize it for just about any purpose, from carry (though sounds like you already have a pistol optimized for that) to HD, to competition.

If you did not already have the M&Pc I would recommend the 19... I have a G19 that I use for virtually everything that I use a handgun for. Carry, range time, and IDPA. The 19 is a true "jack of all trades, master of none" pistol. The 17 is too, just with a slightly bigger frame persuasion of course.
 
I think you should add the Glock 29 to your list of possibilities... I voted for the 19 because of the options you listed that's my favorite, but the 10mm in a compact size with 10+1 capability would be pretty much the most amazing deal ever and if you want to practice you could load the 10mm down to 40S&W to make it cheaper and recoil less during range sessions. Just something to think about...

Why not have both? Get G22 or G23 and get the Lone Wolf 40-9 conversion barrels ($99 from Cheaper Than Dirt) and you can shoot 40S&W and 9mm, even lead. ;)
 
The only blue label G17's in stock are 4th generation. Are they really that bad or is it just a "They changed my Jeep's headlights to square!!!" type of thing.
 
Where are you hearing they are bad? I saw the thread on this forum but really...
I'm sure they are just as reliable as a Gen 3.

it is too early for anyone to tell so i cant back up my own statement, but i have some faith in glock, like you would have in a jeep
 
If I were you, for about the same money as a Glock, you can buy a CZ 75B. The CZ was a better choice for me. I had a Glock 19 that I gave to my son a couple of years ago. I thought it was a little too blocky. The CZ is a nicer to shoot; and, mine is VERY accurate. I highly recommend CZ. Heres a picture:

If you are most comfortable with a full size service pistol, like the advantage of having a slightly longer sight radius and a little more velocity courtesy of the extra half-inch of barrel, go with the Glock 17.

I've had one (Glock 17) on my hip for the last 20+ years and it has never been a problem to carry, conceal, maintain or practice with.

That being said, I carry the G29 10mm as my hunting backup now. The 10mm is for those who finally get serious about stopping power.
 
Get Glock 22. It is a bit more powerful than 9mm which makes it better for hunting. Its ammo is easier to find and not much more expensive than the 9mm.
 
Voted G-21. I suggest the "SF" version.

I wish I could've voted for a G-34 or G-35, as they would fit your limited criteria better, but you inexplicably didn't include them.
 
Looks like a lot of people think the G19 is a fullsize, like you requested, it is a compact. I voted G17 but would have voted for the G34 if it was offered. I see the CZ fans made their presence known, my G34 smokes my CZ 75 in both speed and accuracy. Love my CZs, in particular the PCR. but I use the G34 for IDPA, USPSA matches, the G34 always makes the range trip. Of your choices I would do either the G17 or the G22.
 
I voted G21 out of the choices. For woods carry I would get the Glock 29 10mm. I think that will be my next Glock.

Seriously, this is hunting back-up. You can load the .40 with some 180gr loads and have a heavy, deep penetrating load. with 9mm you are just that much more limited.
For HD you can load the typical 155-165gr loads and really have some serious stopping power.
Oh and go for full sized. You already have the M&P9c. So your compact niche is already taken care of. you might as well take advantage of a full sized gun, or what the heck would be the point of looking for the new gun? If you get a compact like the 19 or 23, you might as well just stick with the M&Pc.

I agree. Also works well with the 31.

I'd go with the full size guns myself, at least with the first one. To me, the slight difference in size between the 17/19 sized guns doesnt mean anything carry wise, and you loose a couple of rounds in the mag, and that extra velocity of the longer barrel. When your ready to go smaller, just jump on down to the 26. There, you will see a more noticeable difference in size between the two.
 
Im might buy a Glock 20 for woods carry here in Montana. A 5 inch barrel S&W 44 mag gets a bit too bulky for those long hikes, and I'm already carrying a .30-06. Does anyone know how much velocity/energy the smaller glock 10mm loses compared to the Glock 20?
