what rifle is Chilean soldier using in today's New York Times?

A scan might help. I don't get that paper and the online edition wont let me zoom in far enough to tell what it is.
 
I've seen several photos of Chilean soldiers with Swiss StG57s (in .308)...
 
Sig or HK. Can't tell from the picture, but if I had to bet I'd say HK.


Most of South American uses G3 variants.
 
Probably HK, its the most common thing seen in central and south america. I spent a lot of time in mexico and was always seeing groups of 3 or 4 black uniformed soldiers walking up and down the beaches carrying HK G3s. These patrols were almost always very young kids that in all seriousness were no more than 17 or18yrs old. Always glad to come home after those experiences!

There is a photo on the front page of todays Wall Street Journal of a Chilean soldier carrying what appears to be a German built MG-3 machine gun.
