how does this rate compared to a similair multi-tool from leatherman or SOG?

agreed. the front/back mounted tools are weak in comparison to the leatherman or gerber equiv's. also the steel is much more thin AND brittle and if you can get an edge on any tool it doesnt seem to hold imho. could just be me though. i know they were going for "slim" but it came out "cheap."

I don't think I have ever seen a good review for anything made by Schrade.

For the last two years all Schrade products are coming out of China. Some good, some very good, and some can be labeled China Junk, and I don't mean the boat.:)

For what its worth Schrade died in 2005.

The stuff marked Schrade now is made for Taylor Brands, who purchased the rights to use Schrade's old trademarks (among others).

Most of this new stuff is made off shore and not up to the old Imperial Schrade Corp's standards.

I actually own two of these. I would have to agree when comparing it to a top of the line multitool like a Victorinox Swisstool, the Victorinox comes out on top. It's a pretty big and heavy tool, not the best to EDC. In fact, it's so big there have been times I had a hard time using it as a screw driver because there wasn't enough room to rotate it around.

However, because it is so big it, it seems pretty rugged to me. On the occasions I've used it, I've never babied it, and nothings ever broken.

I wonder if some of the other reviewers have actually used the Schrade. Like I said, it's no Leatherman, but I wouldn't rate it as junk, either. It's serviceable.

I own the old Schrade Toughtool. The one from before Schrade went under and was bought by Taylor. it's the Made in USA model.
It's among the best of the best, and at 15 years old, I'd still put it up against any leatherman or Gerber multitool any day.

I just recently (3 weeks ago) bought the new toughtool, made in China under contract from Taylor. It is one of the most poorly made multitools I've ever felt, comparable to the $5 ones you see in the bargain bin in a hardware store. Terrible fit and finish, and actually dangerous! The parts like the knife and saw that are supposed to lock back actually don't consistently lock. a little pressure on the back of the knife can pop it right out of the lock. I wouldn't use one if it was the last multi-tool left on earth.
I've sent it back to Taylor and they are seeing what they can do for me.

Here's my Schrade/China multi tool...:)
Some minor issues with the sheath but pretty good value.
1" hardwood dowel (15/16") in the shop fit perfectly...
