Well, during the oscars last night, I started painting my rifle. Nothing better to do. I'd rather wrestle a porcupine then watch that. Anyway, I finished it up tonight, here is the finished result. I want to see it in the sunlight to see what it really looks like. Not perfect, but not bad for a first attempt. Anyone else want to showcase their work?

Your "not bad" is a lot better than my "good enough". Great work! How did you get the grass look? Last one I did I used fishnet to get a "fish scales" look - Krylon green over a black base.

SWEET! Does it give you any pucker factor when you first apply paint to a 1100 dollar scope? Not sure I could bring myself to do it. The paint job is very nice especially for a first attempt.

How to get the grass look

I laid down a coat of tan first, and then made "stencils" out of my wife's broom and masking tape. I then held them up to the weapon and dusted them with OD green and earth brown krylon. One thing that I noticed is that the further back I held the can, and the more I used brief shots, the better it turned out. I started to get less blending when it started getting dark and I was in a hurry to get done. Not all bad tho. Remember that the base coat is going to be the color of whatever is held up to the weapon when you spray. So if you want to do leaves, you might want to lay down a coat of green. I am going to experiment with laying down a base of green and tan, and then I will have some green grass and leaves in there too...

LRS_Ranger, nice paint job. I hope your scope never has to go back to Leupold for warranty work ... assuming it is a Leupold Mark 4. I'd love to paint my Mark 4s but I don't want to lose the lifetime warranty. Frankly, I think their painting policy sucks particularly if there's no oven time involved, but heck, they make the rules.

:)

Heres my FN SPR A3G 308 amd 700 PSS 300WIN MAG taken with a crappy cell phone a few years back.....

They were my first and second respectiveley. The FN was some weeds I got from my neighbors yard, ha.

Both of my MK4's are painted. I masked over the SN's on the bottom. I called Leupold to verify this and they said no prob long as no paint got into the turret workings and the sn's could be clearly identified. Easy day.

Man you folks are good.
20 years ago I got half liquored up one night and spray painted my patrol car trunk-gun with some of my kid's model paints.
It looks like my kids did it compared to your efforts. I could not force myself to paint the metal.

When did you call? I called the service department twice in the second half of last year and was told on both occasions that they'll only honor the warranty if the scope is painted by one particular individual (I have his contact info somewhere). But if they've changed their policy then this is great news! I shall be calling them tomorrow for sure since I have a number of Mark 4s that I'd like to paint.

THe only one I ever did. It hid surprisingly well in tall grass, broke up the outline nicely.

Now I'm gonna have to do another one!

mmmmmm...........racking brain........must have been somewhere about 3 years ago. They could have changed since then.

bkjeffrey, I just spoke with Sean in technical support at Leupold and he said that painting will only void the finish warranty and not the internals .... that's GREAT news!! I've been wanting to paint some scopes for a while now but held off based on what they told me last year.

Did you use some form of tool box lining to get the mesh look on the Remington?

:)

Here's my first...

I started with DuPont metal conditioner, then put a base coat of self etching primer. Then used Krylon textured paint to give a non-slip finish. I learned a lot from this experience...planning on doing my 870 before Turkey Season.
