I was at Academy yesterday looking for a Beretta 92FS and
ended up getting an M&P 9. They were out of the Berettas and the M&P was $499 with the rebate and two mags. I though, what the heck, I'll give it a try.

I did not research the M&P design very much, but knew a little
about them(adapted by many agencies, range reports etc.).
After bringing it home I decided to look into any issues with
the M&P series and I was shocked to see all the problems people(and departments) are having with them, especially the 9mm. Failure to extract, eject, broken strikers, finish issues etc.

I guess my question is, are these problems with the older
versions(mine was made in April 09, sn # dssxxxx) or do they persist with thge newer versions also?

I like the way it feels in the hand, the trigger seems pretty bad, and that stupid take down tool was hell to get out(I think
I twisted the little tab off, it practicallly falls out now  )

I think all of the problems you describe were with the early release units and have been resolved. You do not hear about recent issues like those with the M&P anymore.

I'll give you that the trigger is harsh on some and it is the luck of the draw on how good or bad it is, on my M&P 40 I sent it in for a trigger job mostly to lighten it. It was smooth enough after I broke it in, it just approached Nagant revolver levels of trigger pull.

I don't understand the take down tool issue.. mine is an easy twist to pull it out but stays put just fine. I've never heard of somebody having a problem with that part.

I have an MP-40 and it's had about 500 rounds through it with no problems. Mine has been very reliable but only for target plinking. This particular pistol has never seen any sort of action. This being said, there have been a few reported problems with M&Ps but alot of these come from reloaded ammo and extensive use. As the average shooter will never see more than 3000 rounds through a pistol, I think they're doing just fine. I like my M&P but if I were to choose one gun to trust my life to for the rest of my life it'd be my Beretta 90-Two or Sig 226.

In short, M&P is a great gun and I LOVE the way mine shoots. However, it's a bit more of a prima donna than some of my other guns. This aside, if you're not planning on taking it to the gates of hell and back it's an awesome pistol to shoot and comfortable as hell.

The M&P9 is an excellent choice. I don't think you made a bad decision at all. The problems you read about are with the earlier versions of the M&P9 and should be resolved now. On the other hand, if you find that you do have problems, S&W's customer service is one of the best. So, you're still in good hands...

As for the trigger, it will get better as you shoot it more. There is the Apex sear that you can buy and install to improve the feel and take up on the trigger. Just go to www.mp-pistol.com and do a search on "Apex sear." You'll find lots of info on it.

Enjoy your M&P9!

Sounds like a good buy to me. I have read nothing but good about current M&P reliability.

Yes it was a bad buy! Now go home and apologize to your Glocks!:) Not really, its a fine gun to shoot and ergos are great. I had one at one point, I ended up selling it only because I wanted to ccw it and it was just a little large.

Turn that frown upside down, you did great. The M&P is a great gun. I have the M&P45c and it is has never had a single issue out of a few thousand rounds. Most of the M&P haters are just people who have never owned one and like to perpetuate some crap they heard about issues with the first batch of M&Ps.

All of those bugs seem to be worked out, and if you do have any problems with it I can assure S&W will promptly get it fixed at no charge for you. S&W is pretty much regarded as having the best CS in the game.

the Apex Sear and Firing Pin Block has been so well received that they are going out as fast as they can get them produced. plus Randy (Lee) and Scott (Folk) have put together really useful videos on YouTube to guide you through the DIY installation. for less than shipping your gun out to be worked on, you'll end up with a trigger pull/feel to rival that on the M&P Pro.

Quack - can you comment of the change compared to the stock one on your Pro?

they are also in final testing on their improved extractor for the M&P

You definitely bought a great gun. It is definitely a better gun than most out there, and only shy of a couple. You did real well with it. I personally love the feel of an M&P. Much better than other S&W and definitely better than any glock out there. But "feel" is definitely a personal preference. But it's a good quality shooter. You done did good.

Instead of using the takedown tool, you can usually just lower the sear disconnect with your pinky finger. Also, you can pull the trigger to disassemble, just like a Glock. Get the Apex products listed above, and you'll be really happy with the trigger. I have over 1200 rounds through mine without a single problem, and really love the gun.

I think you did fine. They are good guns and it should serve you a long time. If not, S&W will probably fix any issues you might have

With a DSS gun what I would do is change the black striker to the new design silver striker. Then you should be good to go.

Trigger - Total travel - take-up - reset - trigger weight
M&P 9 Pro (stock) .55" - .34" - .21" - 4lbs 2.8oz
M&P 9 Pro (Apex) .55" - .385" - .165" - 3lbs 5.2oz

the trigger weight was done using a Lyman Digital gauge and a 10 pull average.

i had 2 other friends shoot my Pro, XDm (w/ Springer Trigger kit) and another friends Glock. All 3 of us agreed that the M&P felt/shot the best, then Glock, then the XDm.
One of those friends that shot all 3 want's to buy my Pro off of me too

Went out about an hour ago to blast around 100 rounds of Winchester
9mm NATO through it. Reliability was 100%(except for that stupid tool
falling out ) and practical accuracy seemed good too. The trigger
is actually very light in my opinion and the takeup seems to be less than
a Glock. I hard a hard time with the beavertail though, as it seems want to
go where the second joint of my thumb is. I tried a thumbs up grip and it
seems to help a little. I guess I'll call S&W to see if they can send me
another one of those ridiculous "tools".

Jury is still out on this one....

Sounds like you need to install one of the other grips that came with the gun, and that the trigger was better than expected. Let us know how it goes.

Ya, I'll try both of them next time I go out to shoot. I was shooting
that NATO stuff, which seems extremely hot, maybe that why it
felt like it was digging into my thumb joint.

I just tried to call S&W to get another "tool", I guess they
are off for Good Friday as they should be. :)

Gary, if I decide to keep it, I'll order that "improved" striker
from them also.

You made an excellent purchase.
i bought my M&P9c in the fall of 2008.i probably have 600+ rounds through it and it has been reliable and was my edc until recently. it eats everything i put in it and if i did my part it was fairly accurate.
I always use a snap cap in my pistols as many pistols do not respond well to dry firing.

don't worry about what you read somewhere by who know's who...

worry about first hand experience. If you are going into this ownership with a negative feeling about it already, you are not going to like the gun.

Its a great firearm, shoot it and conclude for yourself.
