Been meaning to trick my 870 out for a while now, finally got an "M4" stock, tac rail with a vertical foregrip, surefire, 8 shot mag extension, and the Mossberg 18.5 in. breaching barrell on order from Midway/CDNN. Can't wait to put it all together and thow some lead through it. Should be a nice home defense rig. :D

Can you put a Mossberg barrel on a Remington shotgun? Mine don't fit across the platforms.

Well, color me embarassed. I did not know that Mossywas making 870 barrels these days. Both of mine are older guns, so it is nice to know that I can get a cheaper barrel these days for the older Remmy.

I picked up one about 3 weeks ago from Cheaper than Dirt, it was the plain 18" Mossberg barrel for my 1969 870 WingMaster. $106 for the barrel and $31 for a new Limbsaver recoil pad. Just a great shooting platform for slugs and 00 and nice looking to boot.

C'mon OP, don't you know it's taboo to discuss putting accessories on any shotgun used for HD here?

In all seriousness, what you're describing is pretty close to my HD shotgun. The Magpul MIAD grip and CTR stock feel more comfortable to me than any factory shotgun stock I've tried.

I will add two things though, regarding the vertical foregrip.

1, I have noticed that using a vertical foregrip seems to torque the action bars some. That made me a little uncomfortable so I'm currently using rail covers for a more normal grip.

2, If you still decide you want one, make sure you use a really sturdy one. I have personally experienced plastic foregrips meant for .223 rifles BREAK OFF the rail under 12 gauge recoil.

Should be a nice home defense rig.

Do you forsee a need to breach your own doors? You know, it's YOUR house. You could just unlock them...

:D you could unlock them lol I almost died on that one.. But what if the BG is behind the door? why would he want to take his hands off the gun? :neener:

I do not know if you can mix barrels with different brands..

"Hello, 911? Yeah, help! I'm trapped inside my house! I can't get this friggin' door open and .... wait a minute! I have a shotgun set up for door breaching! And a pile of sintered breaching slugs! Never mind! ... <click>"

I can imagine some guys just LIVE for the day a door is stuck somewhere in their town ... "HOLD ON! I have JUST the thing! I've been wating to use this for YEARS!"

:D

Seriously I have a few things like that. Right now I don't have a gun fitting that role but you could say that about my spare Welder supply unit, my 30mm Axle Nut Socket (for Saturns), my 02 sensor socket, a set of long allen wrenches and my set of crowfoot adapters. Also 2 CNC Edge-Finder Probes.

Yeah some people love those kinds of tools. Something you don't need tons but when you need them... you NEED them. Hey that's just like a Home Defense Firearm, you don't use it daily but you better have it when you need it!

I kind of like the breaching muzzle on mine, although to be completely honest, my reason for purchasing it had nothing to do with function.

They just happened to have one at the local gun store, and the price was certainly right. It was a PGO, but Mossberg doesn't offer the stocks that I like from the factory, and the PGO costs less, so I figured, hey, it's as good as it's going to get. I'll just put a stock on it later, AND... and here's the part where the breaching muzzle comes in...

'There's no way they're going to keep that breacher muzzle in production from the factory for too long. Might as well snap it up before it becomes an expensive collector's item.'

.........Well, I also thought the Mateba would be around forever.

Congrats on your setup Nathan. Don't let the snide remarks about your, in this case, barrel of choice, ruin your day. It's just part of that same old argument of "tactical" vs. run of the mill.

Personally, I think the breaching barrels look cool. Practical? Maybe not. But, the cool factor is there, IMHO. Regardless, I tend to go for the "practical tactical" stuff, if need be. Right now though, the only thing "tactical" on my Mossberg 590 is a tritium front bead and a butt stock shell carrier. I had a white light system up front, but with the heavy walled barrel I currently use, it was a bit too much on the weight end of things. Kinda pissed me off as I truly see value in a weapon mounted light when it comes to shotguns. Handguns, however, could probably go without such a rig. Unless, of course, you only plan on doing two handed shooting the rest of your life. ;)

Anyway, happy shooting!

Breaching can be done just fine without a breaching attachment on one's shotgun.

See, Nathan? Guess you can save your money then for something useful ... like practice ammo. Seeing as you'll be able to open your doors even without the "you'll-poke-your-eye-out" barrel.

I'm sure that's a load off your mind.

:D

Hello friends and neighbors // If you can afford the ammo.

Check out Ammunition To Go: 12ga. specialty ammo.
Awesome versatility for that new barrel.

My 870 came with the breacher choke but I can't justify $5.50 a round to open a door.
Somehow $7.77 for a fin stabilized OC teargas round seems ok though.

The breaching barrell does look cool, but no way I would drop $100 on it. I did buy a few boxes of DoD door breaching rounds when cheaper than dirt had them for for a couple bucks, those were fun!
