I started with an OLD 870 Sportsman Magnum with a 24" VR barrel.
The first order of business was to delete about 6 inches of tube. I did this with a hacksaw and a set of jewelers files to clean it up.

I then ordered a Knoxx recoil reducing stock, a sling attachment, mag tube extension and a tritium front sight and a 6-48 with #31 drill bit from My favorite website. Well the tritium sight has not arrived yet, Ill post pics when its added.

Next I decided that since this was more less a plinker than anything I wanted to be able to control comfort and muzzle rise as much as possible. So I decided to try and port the barrel myself.......I guess it came out ok. Plus I like to tinker so I thought I would give it a shot. I figured what the heck...porting with a Knoxx stock should help tame the abuse of those 3" slugs and buck I love so much.

Once that was done I sandblasted the whole gun, Degreased with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner and applied a liberal coat of KG Gun Kote Flat Dark Earth 2400 series on all the metal. I did the trigger, trigger housing, and the forend charging rods in KG Satin Black. The 2400 series of gun kote has to be sprayed on. I did mine with a DeVilbiss DAGR airbrush. I did not have to thin th gun kote any. I also learned a cool trick, If you mess up or get a run with gun kote you can just spray off the paint with brake parts cleaner and start over. I washes right off if its not cured.

I reused the factory fore end. I sanded it smooth, skim coated it in fiberglass and reshaped it. I tried to square off the front end of it as much as possible because I will be adding a strip of picatinny rail to the bottom for my surefire later.....when it arrives in the mail. Once I was happy with it I sprayed it with aerosol truck bed coating from autozone. Give a very sturdy texture that is pleasant to the hand and grips like crazy.

Heres a few before and afts.

The safety is not in right because the detent spring went flying across my shop. Maybe it will arrive with my front sight bead. I have a nice coyote sling that I will add later. I will get some pics of the whole thing later.

Heres the break down.

Used 870.... $175 Buddy
Knoxx specops $ $110 eBay
2 shot mag tube extension $40 Midway
Front side sling attachment $10 midway
KG Gun Kote FDE and Satin Black $20 Midway
Tritium front sight with drill bit and tap about $30 midway
I can Aerosol truck bed coating $10 Autozone

Total= $395. Under $400 for a super sweet, easy recoiling, fun to shoot dual purpose tacticool zombie killer. YES!

Eat your heart out Wilson Combat!!!!!

Now......I have one question. Are the shell latches supposed to be removed from the receiver? I do not think so, but the passenger side shell latch keeps falling out of the gun while trying to reassemble it. Makes putting it together a real headache.

That is a fine looking gun. You done a really good job on that. I like the coating you used. And the porting looks "mean" !!

Those shell lattches are supposed to be steaked into the receiver, but I have seen a lot of them fall out. If you remove the bolt before putting the trigger assembly back in, you can hold the latch in place till the trigger housing is in, then reinstall the bolt and slide.

Thanks.

Not being staked in does not affect the operation of the firearm I take it? And thanks for the tip on re-assembling!

Dang looks nice. I'm about to refinish a few shotguns, ill give that a try.

You are correct, once the trigger assembly and pins are installed, they can't move and will work as intended.

heres a few more pics.

Everyone thought I was crazy for spraying rattle can bed liner on my fore end.......I thought it came out really nice.

A few more of my DIY porting job.

That porting job is amazing. Almost makes me want to give it a try (but alas my project shotgun already has some serious porting). I like the truck liner for the grip though, ive used that stuff to coat treestands, its amazing how much quieter it makes a $30 dollar hang on unit.

I have porting in my bbl but just not that large a diameter. What size drill bit did you use? The shot will leave the bbl inside the shotcup/or wad, even if it is over wad card it should still be pretty safe, the porting is just to let gas escape in theory maybe kind of lie a muzzle brake. Good job, way to save an old Remmy. You may not even need front sight bead that rib looks pretty good. I have seen bbl.s witht the rib removed but it will sometimes leave weld spots, but since you re finished it, it would possibly cover those. I like the rib though. Could you also finish the buttstock with the same treatment you did the forearm? Or would it not stick to the rubberized material?

You can spray it the factory wood buttstock. But it would not stick to the factory rubber recoil pad. I just replaced it with a KNoxx. The truck bed coating on the forearm matches it quite nicely.

Theres no hazards in ported barrels. And I cant exactly remember what size bits I used......basically the sharpest one I had laying around, that wasnt too big.

Good job, though the Robo stocks leave me un-enthused.

A couple things....

First, porting is more than a few holes in the barrel. Done well, the metal left is shaped to direct the vented gasses so they counter the recoil.

Be that as it may, I defy anyone to measure the reduction of a ported shotgun before and after.

Second, bed liner may contain chemicals that will react with the finish on the wood, Let's see how this looks in a year.

And now the key query...

How does it Shoot?....

Actually I did an entire wood stock in bed liner almost 4 years ago.......still looks good.
And if it doesnt, then ohwell. It cost me 10 bucks for the can of rubber. A new Houge is only 17 bucks. Ill replace it later if need be.

How does it shoot????

I havent shot it yet, still waiting on front sight and replacent parts for the safety. The spring and detent ball went flying across the shop up reassembly.

Ill post a range report later..........

Good work it looks great. It makes me want to scan pawn shops for a beat up old 870 to work on. I look forward to reading about how it shoots.
