I'm going to be moving to hawaii (oahu specifically) the first of july, can anyone point me to any good shooting ranges/clubs and are there any hunting opportunities? any and all help will be appreciated.

Much as MMCS said, Koko head is the (well was when I was stationed there) public range on Oahu. Koko Head is a pretty nice range, enjoy.

Also when you move there you have a certain amount of time (3 days) to register your guns with the Honolulu PD down on South Beretania. There are quite a few restrictions , so please before you go look them up and follow them. I was stationed there from 92 to 96 and I am sure things have changed a lot since then. Good luck.

Unfortunately Hawaii is not quite as gun friendly as most of the states in the union. As stated before, familiarize yourself with the laws there. And, unfortunately Koko Head shooting range is the ONLY one. You'll find it on the backside of Koko Head off of Kalanianeole Hwy. just past Hanauma Bay.

If you want to continue hunting you might want to take up archery, you'll have more options. The game on Oahu is Wild Boar and Goats. However, I've never seen a wild goat on oahu, only Boar.

You will either love the islands, or come to hate them. I was born and raised on Oahu, and never once did I meet anyone who owned a firearm (that I knew of). The only hunters I ever saw were bowhunters.

I'm in Hawaii :)

Come stop by the site. We have quite a bit of information up there. Everything that Oregun89 said is true but there are quite a few firearm owners here, they are just more private. As for hunting, there are different areas, some that only allow bow hunting and others that allow gun hunting. You will need some form of Hunters education before you can go though.

Thanks for the link Hud.

@rideandcarry: I'm not military, my wife is an army doctor and she's being stationed at trippler. We've already been talking to as many military people as we can about the island.

@HUD: thank you for the link, very useful.

I am aware of the gun laws in hawaii, not to happy about them, but that's ok, I have a place to store the vast majority of my collection while I have to live there. just taking the 3 basics and a bow.

I figured hog was about all there would be to hunt. Can anyone tell me how the pig hunting is out there? what kind of sizes might I expect? what are the season, if any? what kind of pig population is there?

I shot a pistol and a rifle match at Ewa Beach a few years ago, they do have organized bullseye pistol and some highpower rifle. I had a local guy build me a gun in the early 1990's, when he saw me and a couple of stateside guys at the pistol match he packed up and left. He said he won't shoot unless he can win and he knew he could not beat us.

Apparently, the locals won't compete unless they can win, so they cheated us out of the awards, refused to even send a bulletin and kept them for themselves. I'd be mad but it is classic townie behavior.

We had a guy from Honolulu shoot with us at Camp Perry last year, he explained that there are at least two groups that shoot bullseye and do not like to shoot with or against each other.

I'm sure there is a place for regular range stuff as long as you have a bolt gun.

Like everybody said, Koko head is pretty much the only place on Oahu. If your wife is army, I think there's a range at Schofield Barracks. It's a very restrictive environment. No concealed carry, unles you're the Lt. Govenor or the police chief's sister-in-law. Firearms must be registered within 3 days of arrival. No Class 3 AT ALL, you cannot bring them in state. Transporting must be locked, unloaded, ammo locked & seperated from gun. Want to buy? Pay first, go to HPD for permission, wait a week, then pick up gun.

There are some bills in the legislature this session to bring about concealed carry but I'll be shocked if they pass.

It's already too late for any more bills this year but the Legislature passed a "no take guns in an emergency" and a "civil liability/castle law" bill. The governor hasn't signed them yet, but we are hoping she will.
