Is this an incredibly stupid idea?

I want to try the following in my .45-70 Sharps..

Fill the case with BP and seat a .457 ball inside the case, patched with paper.
Why ? Part curiosity, part trying to reduce the cost of shooting it.

This would not reduce the cost very much...

Maybe try casting Hard Wax Balls, use two...or use an empty Case to cut out hard Wax 'Cylinders' from say 3/4 inch thick Wax...and, just use a little Powder with a heap of Cream o' Wheat over it...compress as best you can...

Should punch Paper alright if not too far from the Target.

And be pretty quiet that way...too...

Well given that a box of 50, Sierra 350 Grain bulelts cost about 30 Euro's it is pretty cheap.
For some reason getting cast bullets is somewhat of an issue, and the only affoardable bullets available seem to be 350 Grain H&N TMJ's. I have sourced 200 Cast 475 grain bullets for 80 Euro's. :(

Didn't I read somewhere that that a lot of Americans where doing the same thing 18th century. Go for it, you can't hurt anything with normal charges.

curious

Would this require a crimp to help build pressure, or would it work the same as a muzzle stuffer?

Get a Mold or two or three! Start casting your own..!

The worst part about buying Bullets, is the cost of their being shipped.

Making your own would allow considerable savings, especially if you can find nice older Molds for good prices.

A .457 roundball should be a tight fit in a sized .45/70 case, no need to crimp, especially since it's a single shot. With a full load of BP, at the velocity it's going to be moving, and the small bearing surface of a roundball, it might strip out of the fast twist rifling of a Sharps. Remember, roundballs were designed to shoot out of a slow twist muzzleloader. If you could use a lesser charge of powder with a filler, like Oyeboten recommended, you might get better results. A tight fitting lubricated cardboard wad behind it, like used for loading cap and ball pistols, might be helpful if you decide to go with a full load. If you don't have your BP yet, you might try a low velocity powder like IMR Trailboss. If you are not familiar with this powder, it is used by Cowboy Action Shooters as a low pressure smokeless powder in rounds originally designed for BP. 14 grains will almost come up to the bottom of a roundball in a .45/70 case. No need to use a filler with this powder, either, and no fouling.

The only smokeless powders in these parts are VV and Tubal. :(
I do plan on using N120 with the Gas Checked 475 grain bullets.
Will try half a case and a full case and see what happens.

Sunray: Since the 45-70 is rated for 70 grains of BP, while my lot of starline brass barely manages 65 I think I might be ok.

The BP? Most defintely.
Smokeless no.. but am putting in a little bit of tissue paper to keep the powder at the bottom of the case to avoid hang fires.

Afy,

Another option for cost savings is to use less of the blackpowder and seat the ball down on the powder, ie no airspace between powder and ball. Check on some of the black powder rifle web sites for additional info. The round ball needs to go a lot slower than the bullet or it will leave a lot of lead in your bore.

Paper patching a round ball ? I have PPd bullets but never tried a round ball.

Thankyou for the advice... will update with my results.

Not in France you wont. Plus its a time issue more than anything else.

It's Not Stupid

No, half the fun of reloading is doing your own experimenting. As long as you're not doing something dangerous (what you propose is not) it's not stupid at all.

Besides....... if you're saving money AND having fun - what more could you want?
