3 inch Colt 9mm defender 1911

can anyone provide some feedback on this as far as reliability/accuracy?

just saw one at a gunshop for $890, and it was fit pretty nice.

but the one in that link is a colt new agent in 9mm. quite a bit different. still an interesting read though.

I don't imagine it being entirely too different, reliability should be identical, I'd think.

I used to own one in .40 S&W. Being lightweight, it was a bit of a hand full when shooting. I would suspect being 9mm would help with that. 9mm shot from a 5" steel 1911 is very pleasant to shoot. As almost no recoil whatsoever.

I thought the Defender was .45 ACP only. I even checked Colts web site and 45 ACP is all it shows to be available in.

40 S&W in a 1911 3" would be my dream gun!

The .40 Defender is no longer produced. You do see them offered from time to time, but you can imagine the asking price is usually a bit obscene.

The .40 Defender was only produced during the first year of production and has, predictably, become a collectors item. Nice to see that there is another option in small 9mm 1911 style guns.

Absolutely love my Colt Defender in 45 ACP. My only 1911'ish gun. Not issues whatsoever, after about 350 rds, only cleaned once after 300 rds.

It's been on the website for a little while, but with no description. For crying out loud, how hard could it be to toss the thing's specs on there?

Anyway, the 9mm Defenders are new. There can't be many in circulation. As one of these weird folks who loves the 1911 in 9mm, I'm glad to see more options available.

Glad some one found one I haven't even saw one. I have the 45 and it my main carry 1911 I would love to have in 9mm just to out shoot a friends little expensive Springfield EMP. I know it would he will miss a barn standing inside.

i've only had experience with one in .45ACP

for what they cost, i think you would be better served with a Springfield EMP...not a lot smaller, but build quality is superior and the action's timing has been optimized for the 9mm cartridge

i already have an EMP40. there's no question the EMP's are built to better quality.

i was just thinking of the defender as a cheaper alternative to an EMP9.

The top of the slide is a matte finish, so no problems with glare or anything. I love mine and carry it when wardrobe permits. I have about 450 rounds with only one malfunction, which I believe to have been ammo related. No problems with hollowpoints wither. I've run about 100 of those through. It is very accurate at 7 to 15 yards. I haven't tried it beyond that.

Yes, all of the hollowpoint was +P. The FMJ was standard. I think the HP were Winchester (PDX or something like that).

I'm not sure on the hard to find part, but I would guess so as I bought the only one they had and haven't seen a replacement come in yet.

Mine has been absolutely reliable and it is surprisingly accurate for a 3" 45. The group below is 7+1 rounds at 14 yards. It shoot better than I can, I threw two shots away due to impatience. I put the highlighter in for a group size comparison.

I paid $885 for mine, so that is probably about MSRP. I would love a 9mm one, that might cost more due to rarity.

^^hmmm the $890 price i found also includes 3 months of free rangetime at the indoor range there too. so i guess that's a good deal....

found out on another forum that colt made some mods to it too. the one i saw has the upswept beavertail, rather than the downswept one like yours. not that it really matters, they both feel good. the original 9mm defenders didn't have the bottom of the slide beveled either.
